When I ordered it however, I received a bag made by 'Desert Wolf' which had a full leather flap. (This model: http://www.amazon.com/DesertWolf-Genuine-Crazy-horse-Leather-Messenger/dp/B00V5HF8BI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1442010965&sr=8-2&keywords=desert+wolf+messenger+bag) The Desert Wolf bag was sent to me in error. While very nice in fit, finish, and construction, the color just wasn't for me. The grey looked way too similar to blue jean material in the right light. I returned it, and ordered this bag in coffee color.
When I received my 'new' bag (or rather the correct bag), I was blown away. I can't believe I hesitated to buy this. I'll try to break this down into categories to improve readability..
Construction:
I've used this bag to haul paperwork (medical journals, etc.) and incidentals for a couple of weeks now. I have not been able to discover a single issue in terms of construction such as failing stitching, holes in the cloth, etc. It looks absolutely perfect and feels like it's going to stay that way. I like that the top of the flap (and section where the handle is) is reinforced with something solid. This gives that square shape to the top that takes this from looking like a loose sack of cloth to a high-dollar bag. I was worried I wouldn't be confident about carrying it by the handle sometimes, but it's so solid I have no qualms doing so.
Appearance:
I'm in love with this coffee color. From far away you can't quite tell if it's leather or not. When you get closer, you find it's canvas, with a look of something found in a nice second-hand store, back when canvas was 'real'. I am very glad I didn't go with the grey (see above). I'm also a big fan of the flap. The partial leather is attractive and makes a good [under]statement. It's handsome and masculine without being trendy. I'm not in love with the slightly narrow shoulder strap but it's hardly a strong negative.
Size:
The size is true to the description. If you're hauling textbooks, binders, large laptops, etc., then this isn't the bag for you. But you probably figured that out already. If it's going to be used for a small book or two, some paperwork, some electronics of reasonable size, then this is perfect and you should expect it to meet your needs.
Functionality:
As I said the size is great for me. It is well structured, so it doesn't flop around and make it hard to work with. I love the pocket at the rear, because it's not 'full depth'. I can unzip it and reach all the way to the bottom of it with the bag still draped over my shoulder. I don't have to take the bag off to dig around inside. This is small but very helpful for me (I keep my keys and ID badge there and want easy access). The interior is well laid out and easy to find things. The magnetic clasps are an odd point, though. They are secure, and won't come loose without deliberate effort. This means if you needs very quick access, you're going to struggle. It usually takes two hands, and even then they can re-connect. Same for closing this, it's a slow and deliberate affair. It's not really a drawback or a plus, just a reality of dealing with this style of bag. It's still easier than trying to deal with a real buckle system though!
Overall, what you get for the price is just amazing. I'll absolutely buy from this brand again, and probably buy some of these as gifts. I would have picked this bag out in a room of 'name brand' bags, it's not something that you feel like you've settled for. And I've got several compliments on this bag already.
Stop thinking about ordering this and just get it. It's an easy win.
Also, just as an extra endorsement for this bag: I belong to a grad student forum online, and multiple people recommended this particular bag on there. We were discussing what types of supplies are good to have when you go for a PhD (time-savers, things that are worth spending a bit more on, etc.) and this bag received more recommendations than any other brand of messenger bag discussed.
**** Update ****
I had to remove one star, sadly. I still love the bag, but I've noticed that the back zipper is not holding up as well I had expected. I don't put much in that back pocket other than my keys and sometimes a notebook, but the zipper often comes undone on its own (not unzipping, but coming apart). It started doing this about a week ago; I've been using the bag for only three months now, so that does concern me.
I purchased the coffee colored bag. This bag is very good looking and seems well constructed. I have confidence that it would stand up well for my purposes which would be moderate to heavy usage. The only thing that might make me send this back is the lack of pockets on the front for ease of getting to wallet, passport, keys, lip balm, phone that sort of thing.
It is a nice bag. I love that it has a handle. Definitely worth the price. If you can live without front pockets, go ahead and get this one.
Thanks to all of you who answered my question. This morning the bag arrived, and my take is:
This is an excellent made bag. It feels awesome and looks very professional. (I bought the Coffee color). Everything I mentioned fit in very nicely and the bulge is unnoticeable. Once you fill it with the above, you still have room (although little) to put other things. A paper notepad, pens, a couple of magazines
If you are looking for a bag for your Macbook Pro (un-sleeved), your iPad, their chargers, this is absolutely what you are looking for.
As a bonus, if you are traveling with a wheeled carry on, the hand fits over your carry on handle very easily so you don't have to actually "carry" it if you are jumping from one gate to another at airports.
