i've changed oil and flat tires before, but wouldn't have been able to do much else without this manual. with it i've replaced the brake master cylinder, the clutch master cylinder, headlights, vacuum hoses, the clutch pedal and more. they leave no stone unturned.

if you're buying an old car, and plan to do any wrenching yourself, pick one of these up. it's the weekend mechanic's bible.

Owning a car this old means you almost have to be a mechanic - Saabs are reliable but when something goes wrong with one, you get to fix it yourself because not many mechanics know 8-valve Saabs and the ones that do charge lots of money.

Three companies publish service manuals for old European cars: Chilton, Haynes and Bentley. In my experience Chilton's manuals aren't worth bringing home. A Haynes is a lot better, but still not great. A Bentley is what you want.

The book isn't quite complete; it will not teach you to rebuild a transmission. This is good, because most home mechanics who attempt to rebuild a transmission end up destroying it. All you need to know about a Saab transmission are how to change the two fluids it contains and how to get it out of the car, both of which ARE in here.
