Mex is a man with a troubled heart after his family has been murdered by the drug cartel. Only his sister lives to remind him even she could be killed and now she has been kidnapped. Head f the cartel makes a deal with Mex if he will find his missing daughter he will release his sister. Mex has a good trusted friend who is a journalist and they work together to find the daughter while running into many suspenseful adventures as the plans go down the tubes. The drug cartel head has a son who is looking to become head of the cartel and may be working to take over without his father knowing. The story will grab you quickly and drag you through many heart stopping moments as you can't put the book down until you see that Mex is out of trouble and not only gets the daughter to her father but his sister back. You are in for a real treat reading this book.

I downloaded my book onto my Kindle from Amazon and recommend it to anyone who likes suspense and mystery.

This one was a winner. It was exciting. It was filled with intrigue and strong, strong characters. I loved the Mex character and the tragic past coupled with Cade and her rather interesting background. I loved twists of the plot and the focus on the Voodoo and Catholicism angle.

It has danger and a real plot twist at the end that left me gasping. I never imagined this in my wildest dreams. I believe you too will be surprised and feel Mex's pain and sense of betrayal. I also loved that the author had Mex be the rescuer for Dia the drug cartel leader's daughter and that Vincente Vega was either directly or indirectly connected to his own personal tragedy.

It you like thriller's service up at a million miles an hour this one is for you. Buy. Read and enjoy the hectic pace and the thrilling ride.

I read another book by this author and liked it so I went back to an earlier one. This was completely different material but still an entirely well-developed plot with good characterization. It felt a little rushed at the end but I think that was to facilitate the feel of rushing to save the girl. All in all a good read for a new author. The lead character's struggles were well thought out and studied but gulping down a pill in that scenario does not make one feel better suddenly. Those meds must be taken consistently for weeks to make a dent in the feelings that they must control. Just a helpful hint from someone in the medical field and whose been there. I would definitely recommend this author.

This was the best read I've had in some time. Well thought out, good attention to detail. The characters were developed well, and the plot was plausible and moved along at a good pace. Ms. Brantley's writing style is crisp, with very little banter that wasn't relative to the story. I disagree with the reviewer who thought the ending was quick and predictable...I suspect he was disappointed that the story ended. This is one of those books that engages you in a way that makes you hope it has 100's of pages, yet makes you anxious to learn how it ends....a balance that many authors don't achieve.

Kudos Ms. Brantley....I am starting another of your books now....can't wait.

Well-written, original story of a depressed man having to hunt for a Mexican drug cartel leader's granddaughter that is involved in a cult less he loose his own last living relation as a result. Book had some great passages including "He'd sacrificed all of them-everything-for his honor" and "If any harm comes to Sedona you and I will get to know each other on a very personal level." My only regret is that I couldn't connect with the protagonist as much as I would have liked to as his personal depression affected his reason in ways that distanced me from his character. Otherwise a very good suspense novel that I would recommend.

When I started this book, I wasn't sure that I would like it. It didn't take long for me to know that I would read this one word for word until the very end. It is mystery with a great deal of suspense and a surprise at the end. The characters are well-developed, but they always retain a bit of mystery about them. I don't enjoy graphic mysteries, and this one was not graphic. There was murder in it, but we did not have to slog through gory details. I highly recommend this for those of you who like mysteries that don't need gory details to tell the story.

The Sacrifice by Peg Brantley is an edge of your seat crime thriller which captured my attention from the very beginning. It’s the kind of book that, had I had the time, I would have loved to devour in one sitting.

The main protagonist is Mex Anderson, a complex character so called because he is half Mexican. He was a law enforcement officer who refused to be bought off by drug cartels and paid the ultimate price when his family was murdered. The story begins when he is approached by Vincent Vega, the leader of a cartel and a man who Mex suspects could have played a role in the slaying of his family. Vega convinces Mex to try and locate his missing daughter.

What follows is an exciting journey full of twists and turns that takes us from Mexico to New Orleans. One of the things I really like about this book is the way Brantley brings the settings alive. She creates places of vivid colour and culture but steeped in danger.

The conflict within the story comes from the explosive combination of Mexican criminals and a religious cult. Brantley describes the cult of Santeria in such a way as to make it seem totally believable. As the plot develops, the cult becomes more and more chilling until the tension is almost unbearable.

I really like the characters in the book and the relationships they have with each other. Mex is a flawed hero, crippled by debilitating depression whilst trying to do the right thing. His friend Darius is almost his mirror image, symbolising what Mex has lost with his own perfect family. Vincent Vega, the villain of the piece, pays for his sins through his dysfunctional relationships with his own children.

My favourite character however is Cade Le Blanc, a native of New Orleans who can hold her own in any situation. Having lost her sister as a result of her involvement in a religious cult, Cade devotes her life to rescuing and deprogramming cult members. She is the driving force in helping Mex and Darius to launch a plan to retrieve Vega’s daughter. Both Cade and Mex are damaged by their pasts but they are clearly attracted to each other and Brantley cleverly leaves the reader with the hope that their relationship might develop.

The Sacrifice is a page turner that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone who likes crime thrillers with lots of action. It would be the perfect holiday read as I guarantee once you pick it up you won’t want to put it down.
