Presenting the state-of-the-art for the theory and practice of qualitative inquiry, this landmark Handbook has been a publishing phenomenon in the human sciences since it first published in 1994. As with earlier editions, the Fourth Edition is virtually a new volume. Representing the best thinking from top scholars from around the world, the new edition continues the book′s tradition of synthesizing an existing literature, defining the present, and shaping the future of qualitative research. The editors and contributors address issues of social justice and examine how people′s struggles can inform public issues and in turn be transformed into social policy. Their writings are underpinned by a critical framework, and they are committed to addressing issues of inequality. As with previous editions, their aim is to show how the practices of qualitative research can effect change in the world in positive ways.

The 4th edition of this essential publication should provide plenty to debate in relation to the complex space of "qualitative research".
This publication provides a wealth of resources, philosophies, methods, and perspectives. A wonderful companion for those on their own research journeys.

The updates make it even more relevant to students inclined to do qualitative research. I'd recommend it to anyone taking this research route.

Excellent reference ebook, adding the actual page number is a huge bonus, really helps with citing!

This book has been a bedrock of information as I get ready to work on my dissertation. Clearly written and useful.

I was so excited to order the latest edtion of the Handbook of Qualitative Research. Earlier version have been like a bible to me and my PhD students. This edition is less than half the size but about the same price so not good value for money. Futher, I went straight to action research and found that chapter which had previously been so strong now makes all kinds of assumptions and does not lay out the core basic knowledge that new researchers need. It is as if the authors are talking only to experts and they are the people least likely to need a book as good as Denzin and Lincoln can produce. I feel 'burned' and I'll be very wary of buying another edition.

It is okay...I was able to do what I intended, but not to the degree that I intended to do it....if that makes sense.

Outstanding resource for doing qualitative research.

I hope SAGE re-publishes the 3rd edition. The 4th edition is such a disappointment. I used the 3rd edition as a prescribed text in a research methods course that I teach. I was compelled by university requirements to replace the 3rd edition with the 4th edition. I removed the 4th edn as the prescribed text as soon as possible, i.e. at the end of semester..

5.0 out of 5 stars it is a fantastic resource which tries to give equipoise to all arguments
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 21, 2017
I used the library's copy when preparing the initial application for my Masters and once accepted bought my own copy. It can be hard to read, particularly if you are novel to qualitative research, as the terminology is so different to quantitative research. If you persevere with it however, it is a fantastic resource which tries to give equipoise to all arguments. Accessing the literature list that comes with each chapter enhances the experience and is an invaluable resource to those embarking in qualitative research for the first time.

Great introductory text for new qualitative researchers. It is definitely a text book so read through the table of contents and read what is appropriate for you (not all of it may be relevant). Clearly written and well organized. Good for learning the basics from theory to practice.

I think this book is very good resource material for writing a dissertation. I like how many views are given on a topic so that the reader is able to see the picture using different lens.
