Product Description

Acclaimed by emergency care providers and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide (and even beyond the Earth, on NASA space shuttles), the SAM SPLINT is based on an ancient construction principle: curves are strong. The SAM SPLINT is built from a thin core of aluminum alloy, sandwiched between two layers of closed-cell foam. The SAM Splint is extremely pliable. Bent into any of three simple curves, it becomes extremely strong and supportive for any fractured or injured limb.

I just bought three different SAM-type splints on Amazon and they seem comparable:

(a) SAM brand, $13.49, Made in USA
(b) Everready 4.25 X 36 Inch Padded Aluminum Splint, $6.16, Made in China
(c) Dixie 4.25 X 36 Inch Padded Aluminum Splint, $5.87, Made in China

As far as stiffness goes, they are all about as stiff and to me, the SAM seems to be the limpest of them all.

They weigh different amounts, could be foam weight, could be aluminum weight, could be both. In same order as above, weights are:
(a) 123g
(b) 149g
(c) 140g

The only big difference I see, besides instructions printed on the splint, is smell.
(a) No smell
(b) Slight petrochem smell
(c) Slight petrochem smell.

B and c come folded. I smoothed them out and rolled them just like the SAM brand. The fact that they were folded did not seem to affect my ability to roll them or form splints into desired shapes.

I had the opportunity to use one of these in the middle of an Alaskan glacier (Matanuska Glacier). I witnessed a hiker running along the glacier, catch his foot in a small crevasse, and snap both his tibia and fibula. I always carry some survival & first aid stuff when I'm hiking in AK, so I whipped out my SAM splint and some medical (gauze) tape. In no time at all, I had the victim's leg stabilized and he was prepped for an airlift off the glacier.

I highly recommend a couple different sizes of these for anyone who spends time out in the wilderness - hiking, hunting, fishing, camping, etc. They're awesome!

A couple years ago some friends and I were out riding ATV's in the Alaska back country. We were in a very thorny area on a narrow trail and so we were just crawling along, and in a freak accident when my friend in front of me rode over a small fallen tree that was laying across the trail, it snapped and popped up and hit her in the lower leg so hard that it broke both bones clean in half. My friend's husband only had zip ties and was looking for some sticks to splint her leg, but I had a SAM splint and duct tape. We used the SAM splint to support her leg and the duct tape to wrap around the splint and her leg. The splint provided enough support that she rode out herself slowly instead of us having to call for a rescue. IMO everyone should carry a SAM splint in their medical kit.

I bought this to use as a splint for a neighbor's lamb that was born with crooked legs. There is really nothing on the market for lambs, only a few items for calves which would be way too big.
The splint is great. We were able to cut to length, bend as per directions and it really helped this little guy's legs straighten out. The foam covering reduced chaffing and I was amazed at how strong this splint becomes when folded/bent into splint shape. These can also be sanitized and reused which makes them a really good buy.
Good for animals and humans alike!

We train with these and use them in the military, and if there is one thing I can say about the military it is that everything we have has to be able to be quickly deployed and very easy to use in stressfull situations. This product should be in every first aid kit sold. I keep SAM splints in all three of my medical kits, home, auto (which I have used after witnessing an accident that resulted in a fractured arm), and my camping/survival pack. You may never have a use for a splint but in the event that you do a SAM splint far outweighs any temporary solutions that you can come up with.

As an active EMT-b, these are my go to splints. They are easily bent to the desired position which gives a much more secure hold than standard splints. I wouldn't trust patient care to anything else.

This splint works great and if you keep with with your medical kit it is super convenient. I have used it twice at soccer games... The first time a girl feel with a lot of wrist pain we built a splint with an ace bandage to stabilize the wrist. This did wonders until she could be seen at a local ER. The second time very similar with a boy who had hit is arm earlier and it really started to bother him. After going to the ER the doctor said the splint was perfect and left it in place after determining the pain was nothing broken.

One does need to use care if they trim the splint as we have done for younger kids as the trimmed end has sharp aluminum. Simply folding it over twice takes care of the issue.

Overall great product right there when we have needed it.

This is a light packable splint for emergencies. I keep a roll in my emergency response bag for CERT "community emergency response team". Nice to know in a pinch you don't have to use 2X4's or sticks but something made for the purpose.
