Great Performer - Not for Everyone

**1TB Version**

This generation, Samsung used 3-bit TLC flash instead of the 2-bit MLC used on the 970 Pro. This still results in superior IOPS, Read/Writes.

I did three runs back to back for a quick torture test and the results are pretty close to what was advertised other than the IOPS. Those were underwhelming compared to Samsung's claims of 1000k versus the 700k achieved.

Premium price aside, I would suggest this to anyone moving lots of data around frequently and/or want the latest and greatest Samsung has to offer in the Gen. 4 NVME space. Alternatively, the 970 Evo Plus is excellent for those looking for a less expensive but well performing Gen. 3 NVME. Can't go wrong with either.

FYI: Operating System load times and responsiveness will vary depending on your PC's specifications and should be put into consideration when buying a high-end product like this one.

Big fail with 3-bit memory

So the promise of these has fallen short - can't have a true "Pro" if you skimp to 3-bit NAND from 2-bit. The previous generation is a better bet, without the price premium. Real world performance as well as lifetime are worse here. Very disappointing.

Lightning fast!!!

These things are lightning fast in a PCI express 4.0 environment, if your looking at an AMD Threadripper CPU. I just installed TWO of these 1TB SSD m.2x cards in an Asus Zeneth II Extreme TRX40 motherboard and they are insanely fast and have had zero trouble. Do not forget to download Samsung Magician so you can keep these up to date firmware wise and keep them TRIMed(defragged). I swear these cards are like running programs from DDR4 memory DIMMS and not harddrives. they really speed up the entire system OS experience. I highly recommend using WIndows 10 Pro and if you get a high core AMD chip, upgrade to Windows 10 PRO for Workstations to take advantage of your high core count.

UPDATE 1/4/2021:
I just ordered (2) more of the 1TB 980 Pro's for my new Gaming PC build for myself. The previous gaming PC build was for my wife, who does a little more content creation and I do more Gaming. I Have had great results and stability thus far from my previous Two Samsung 980 Pro m2x drives. No issues at all and super fast in a PCI- Express 4.0 environment, utilizing the AMD Ryzen platform. For me having a total of 2 TB internal drive room is plenty for my gaming/pc needs.

Fast, but not advertised speeds. Write speeds drop significantly

I received and installed the drive today. I used a third-party software that cloned my 960 evo with bitlocker onto my 980 pro. Booted with no issues. I did a speedtest with crystaldiskmark and samsung magician. The results are in the screenshot. I don't know how long this will hold up in the long run, but I trust that a Samsung drive will last.
I did get a little under the advertised speeds. I do not know why.
I installed the drive on my ASUS X570 Crosshair VIII Formula with a Ryzen 3900X

Update: I ran a Speedtest on Jan 4, 2021 and found that my write speeds have dropped to 1100mbps

Fastest boot times I've ever seen

With the cloning software from Samsung, the task of cloning my hard drive was quick and streamlined. My times from power on to desktop then to launch a program drastically changed. From a 2tb Seagate FireCuda, it took up to 10 minutes to start Steam from powering it on. With the 1tb 980 Pro,it took a maximum of 45 seconds from powering it on.
Games load nearly instantly. There is nothing bad I can say about this product. Direct upgrade from my 970 Evo Plus.

There isn't much to say here, it's a generational improvement on the standard SSD tech we are all used to, it provides a very very fast transfer rate that slowly drops as it's temperature rises, it has a cache so smaller transfers (Read: Everything aside from 100s of GB) hit close to 7.9GB/s speeds while massive transfers are slower, and will greatly reduce the time it takes to load resources from storage in most if not all applications.

I would suggest a heatsink or heatspreader for this drive if you expect to be moving large files on a regular basis but for most use cases (lookin' at you gamers) you'll never hit the point at which it throttles due to temp. Overall just what you'd expect from any SSD but...you know, faster.

Forget "Data Encryption"

I just spent two days trying to get the SSD's hardware encryption to work with Windows Bitlocker - Nothing worked.
And there is NO documentation on how to activate it - Googling it brings up lots of people having issues... I could not even get it to use Bitlocker software encryption after doing the Samsung Data Migration as the OS drive.
In the end I simply had no other options - I went back to my 970 EVO and software encryption for the OS drive and used the 980 PRO as a data drive with Bitlocker Software encryption.

I tried everything on two different systems with the same problem- Big marketing hype for something that does not work and is not documented.
I find that the EVO is as good in real-life as the 980. Hardware encryption would have made it much faster. I should have saved my money and stuck with the 970 EVOs...

Speeds are exaggerated, my motherboard supports gen 4 speeds but after testing I was only getting 3500 read/write speeds. I'd recommend just getting the cheaper 970plus since the speeds are the exact same.

I set that up with a Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite Wifi and AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU alongside with Crucial Balistix 3600 16-18-18-38 RAM. My Windows 10 PC boots to desktop within 10 seconds from the moment I press the power button. I truly enjoy this. I just have a very big layback on price here. I know, new technology, new interface and stuff, but to me, it never will justify this huge price.

So, am I satisfied? Yes, af course. I hope so for 300$ CAD!

Samsung lost a star because of 2 things. First, I was about to peel off the sticker so I could put a heatsink on top of the card until I did some research to find out that the sticker itself was a way to reduce a bit of heat from the drive. THIS detail should have been in the instructions booklet of Samsung. If you want to install a heatsink, simply intall it over the sticker WITHOUT peeling it. Other point, at THAT price, I would have expected a small set of screws to put on the board because if I want to have 2 NVMe drives on my bpard, I cannot anymore because I used the second screw onboard for this drive. I also did not see any options for an added heatsink because I have read on many reviews that this drive does generate a bit more heat than its competitors. The second thing that made it loose a star is the availablility of the Magician software. I had to wait 2 days for the software to be available on Samsung's own website. AND the app itself is not very clear on what to do. I personally find it hard for new commers like me in the NVMe world to know what to do with what is being shown. So, I am not impressed by the software side either.

Asside from these, I'm happy with my purchase but the 300$ price is still triggering a little something inside and that's the 1Tb version, the 2Tb and 4Tb are just for rich people and my 1Tb was a luxury buy because there were many other options to choose from, XPG, Sabrent, WD all had some good sides too and all have PCIe Gen 4 supported NVMe drives at cheaper prices, although XPG is the cheapest out there. I am satisfied with my purchase.

If you have the extra money after spending for a decent graphics card, CPU, RAM and Motherboard, then YES, I recommend this drive, or else, cheaper drives or even Gen 3 drives are more than enough and worth it to spare a few hundred dollars.

Ordene esta tarjeta NVMe para probarla como almacenamiento secundario de una consola PlayStation 5 pero Sony aún no libera el soporte para ella. Maneja casi la misma velocidad que la WD_Black SN850 la velocidad de escritura es un poco menor a la SN850 pero aun asi son velocidades de escritura 5000 Mb/s y 7000Mb/s en lectura.

Para aprovechar toda la velocidad se necesita una motherboard que soporte PCIe 4.0

Recibí esta unidad m.2 y la instalé con entusiasmo. Ejecuto Ubuntu 18.04 en un procesador Ryzen 5. Tengo un Silicon Power gen4 m.2 que mide casi 5 GB / s para lecturas y aproximadamente 4 GB / s para escrituras. El Samsumg gen4 m.2 se evaluó a 6,9 GB / s como se indica para las lecturas. PERO solo alcanzó los 500 MB / s para escrituras. Esa es la velocidad SATA y totalmente inaceptable para el SSD Samsung gen 4 m.2. Además de ser extremadamente lento para las escrituras, el SSD Samsung gen4 funciona como se esperaba.

Very fast reliable SSD, will only get better once directstorage API from Microsoft is implemented into windows 10, and future PC games. (Prepare for full utilization of SSD speeds in games, think of instantaneous loading for an example. This SSD is already OP in terms of specs, but once directstorage is out this baby will be insanely fast beyond our current expectations.
