See what you can do with Alexa on your Smart TV
This TV is so good, it was almost disappointing how little more I could expect to see in any future models. I bought it on sale for $1800 in 2022 just after the oil prices shot up and the stock market tanked. It's already $2,000 again and I think it's worth more. I really hope they don't discontinue this screen manufacturing technology, it's superb. So as for the normal complaints: I didn't get any dead pixels, I don't get any stuttering, and whatever corner contrast variation there is, I can't see it.
So maybe you could find a few seconds in a special fx movie where the 2022 single-pixel backlighting is better, but you'd have to be looking for it. I looked at the newest models in the stores before and after buying it, and unless you freeze frame and scrutinize a few isolated moments, you won't see any difference. And this 2020 model is plenty bright. I was so glad to be able to turn up the lights after watching a TCL in dim light for years and still be able to enjoy it. Sometimes I think I should turn the brightness down, but it doesn't hurt eyes to watch it. I find the default settings just fine, and the improvements from calibration are too tiny to matter compared to the normal variations in content coloring. Really it's almost disappointing, you just turn it on and it's just great. No tinkering required.
They have newer models that are brighter than they need, but they don't look so good from the side. Nothing looks as good from all angles as this set, Nothing, except old vacuum tubes. If you don't sit directly in front of it all the time, the side viewing quality of this set far outweighs all picture improvements in the last few years, even OLED and single-pixel backlighting control still can't do better in my opinion. I mean I was ready to plunk down more money, but it still doesn't buy any better movie quality than this for continuous, worry-free viewing.
The only downsides of this set are the weight and the anti-reflection coating. NEC actually has the best anti-reflection coating technology of anything I've ever seen, but they aren't in this market. This set's anti-reflection is better than others but it does spread the light over the screen. So if you like dark movies like 'the batman' or 'john wick' you will find yourself repositioning lights or turning them off, but it's only really visible when you have large areas of black. Unless the picture has large areas of black you won't notice. So Usually I watch news and normal movies with lights up high, and I don't see the fresnel effect at all. But for a few things like film noir and space operas, well they should be seen in the dark anyway if you ask me.
The weight is more of an issue. I would love a carbon fiber shell with this screen. I wouldn't want plastic on an 85" screen. The metal was the only alternative in 2020. Now they have carbon fiber shells but they discontinued this screen manufacturing technology. So I'm stuck with the weight. I live by myself so it's just about unmoveable. It's the only downside to me. I don't play games, and I really like the wide viewing angle. Honestly, I can see keeping this set for the rest of my life. I am 62. So younger people might find something better for games in newer sets, but by the time anything really outstanding shows up, I'll be too blind to tell, lol, so that's why I started by saying it was a bit of a disappointment how good this set was. I'll never see old Lucas films any better. Maybe new Star Treks will get to single-pixel stars some day, but unless they make something with the side-angle viewing of this set with single-pixel backlighting, most people just won't jump for paying for something better. So stars and firework sparks are about as small as they will ever be for at least a decade.
A pleasant surprise was how good the smarts were. In particular, the Internet browser. I have HTML5 with all the latest CSS3 effects on my blog, and it works perfectly on this set. This is a Chrome-quality Internet browser. They don't make much of it elsewhere, but with a 85" screen, I can use a remote keyboard and type emails from 20 feet away while cooking on a stove. That's far more smart technology than I thought I would ever appreciate in a kitchen lol.
And we mostly want other people in the room to be able to enjoy the same picture quality who aren't sitting right in front of the set. So even with a metal shell, zone backlighting, and fresnel flare on light spot reflections, this is still the best you can get. Without any real challenge from flagship models even two years later. That's my opinion.
