Product Description

What good is a knife or a pair of scissors if they don't cut? And how useful can they be if you're spending more time sharpening them instead of using them? I certainly would not use this on my Wusthof knives, but for my Henckels and
Gehring knives this worked great. They were REALLY dull...have not been sharpened in over a year, and I ran them through the Shark a few times and they went right through tomatoes with ease, no pressure needed. I do have a diamond sharpener that I bought that doesnt work near as well as this thing...for $10 it was a great investment, even if just to get a bit more life out of some knives not worth taking in for re-edging, but good for everyday.

Let's just put it this way, a relative of mine bought several of these and gave them as gifts. For $5 that seems reasonable.

It ruined a lot of peoples knives. I have 3 kitchen knives that needed to be professionally sharpened to fix the damage done.

My other friends and relatives all had similar experiences. Even on basic knives with standard blade angles, this thing is a piece of garbage.

If you have quality knives, either have them professionally cared for, learn to use diamond stones or get an expensive, 3 stage Chef's Choice sharpener.

This is definitely one of the few items on television that actually works the way it's supposed to. It comes ready to use and works with minimal effort. We have currently run out of things to sharpen!

By no means is this a professional sharpener. The main feature is a couple of very hard metal pieces in a "V" shape. You run your knife through it and it shaves off some of the blade to create a point.
It seems to have worked pretty well on my Ginsus. They're not as sharp as when they were new, but they're not dull and useless anymore. And you normally can't sharpen those kinds of serrated blades, so this is pretty ideal for that purpose. I also used it on a non-serrated blade that came with the Ginsu set and got equally satisfactory results.
However, it visibly wears down your knives and the sharpening isn't ideal. I would never use it on any kind of blade that I would consider getting professionally sharpened. And I'm not convinced it would make them any sharper than a good honing anyway.
It's perfect for making "disposable" knives worth keeping.

I ordered one Samaurai about four years ago and it just recently got to the point where I needed a new one, so I ordered two. For general kitchen sharpening, it's the very best of all the smaller sharpeners I've used, and I've bought a lot of them and usually tossed them soon after. Not the Samaurai. I love this thing. It's very easy to use, although the directions could use a leeeeetle help. But if you just do what the ads say, your knives will be sharp enough to cut that turkey or roast beef or whatever in no time.

The "directions" included with the product are VERY short and poorly written (These are the directions for sharpening scissors, shears: "The best sharpening angle is automatically provided by the wider angle. Hold scissors with handles tightly down to a table as illustrated and move the shar-pen-ing edge slightly tilted over the grinding edge from the handle to the tip."). Huh? There is a grinding edge on scissors? And what, exactly, is the "wider angle" that provides the best sharpening?
I'm not having a lot of luck with this but I've only been at it for about an hour. Maybe tomorrow I'll have a better opinion.

The advertisers claim that the Samurai Shark can resharpen a dull knife to conditions similar to when it was brand new. It works wonders on knives. However, I would not recommend using this product on anything else other than dull blades that used to be sharp. Also, the way the device works is by shaving off the sides of the blade to create a finer edge. Do not use this product on blades that you intend on getting professionally done.

Basically put, the Samurai Shark is a cheap, no-brainer way to resharpen cheap blades that you can replace eventually when it's no longer possible to resharpen them. It does not go beyond what it was designed for.

I was very skeptical initially but gave it a try and was amazed at how well it sharpened my cheep knives. Of course, logically, it can only sharpen straight edges. I am not even going to try it on non straight edge blades as I think it can ruin them. I think it is what some people with 1-2 stars here are talking about.
