I had some issues with three things: the autistic rep, and the actual kink/negotiation, and the treatment of animals. None worked well for me.
I hope if the author continues to write neurodivergent characters, there is more attention paid to better representation - with so few characters like this, the underlying ableism of the character's family, and cruelty was really hard to read. :(
With the kink, the lack of negotiation, the reactions to when the bottom didn't like something came across as very non-consensual. :( also, took away the enjoyment of what could have been super hot for me.
Thirdly, while no dog is killed, one is injured, and i'm not certain the action around it made that necessary. (We already knew that character was a jerk.)
I've read the authors other books, and had far more positive reactions, but I was disappointed with this one. Its ok, it could be way better.
When an ex-client sends someone to take the life of Liz Lewis she knows she has to hide, but she doesn’t know where to go that won’t put her friends and family in danger. Lucky for her she has a friend that knows just the place to send her, even if she has to put on the charade of fake relationship. When Liz arrives at McInroy Farm she doesn’t really know what to expect but she knows she wasn’t expecting Silas McInroy, nor his five dogs that take various likings to her. But she makes do. Silas has no idea what he got himself into when he took the phone call from his brother that was better left unanswered. Having not been close in years, it was always better to just ignore his brother, but something made him answer, and when he saw Liz and the helplessness haunting her eyes, he knew he should help her.
Liz and Silas, I absolutely loved these two together. They have such a love-hate relationship with each other due to Silas’s brother Scott, but once they push past that hurdle, they find that have more to give each other than not. Liz is very forthright about what she likes and wants, while Silas isn’t very good with words but amazing with action, which also leads to very amusing but awkward situations for the couple. I really enjoyed when it came to sex, Liz and Silas has a very different power dynamic that isn’t always explored in romance. Liz used to be a professional Dominatrix to put herself through law school and raise her sister. Since leaving the trade, she knows being the one in power is what makes sex more enjoyable for her, and Silas is open to explore that with her.
Sanctuary is everything I wanted and more as a continuation to this series. I can’t wait to see what Rebekah has in store for the next book, but I’m impatiently waiting.
And the supporting characters! Can Mason get a story? I mean who doesn't want a man who can serve up a melt and Amazing Grace on the bagpipes! Scott needs a STRONG KICK ASS WOMAN TO SHAPE UP HIS PERSONALITY!
This author is a One Click for me. She delivers each time!
