Users of other versions of this adapter (B/G) say it is plug and play with Vista and Windows 7. This was not the case for XP. I had to install the RALink drivers. Installation is a bit tricky and it didn't work the first time around. Then, I connected my desktop using an ethernet connection and the installation worked just fine. Give this a shot if you're having trouble as well.
I am very pleased with the product, especially at this price point.
It looked like the pictures, and uses the RTL8188CUS chipset :
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter
Once I had it working reliably, I ordered a second one to use in another RPI.
This device when it arrived looks slightly different, and sure enough is using a Ralink chipset :
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter
Now, both chipsets are supported on the Pi but it's confusing and inconvenient to not know what chipset you're getting. Clearly the vendors are listing product under whatever Amazon SKU they fancy without checking the details.
Can't comment on how it works with operating systems other than Linux, and under Linux it takes a bit of setting up, but that's common to wifi, not a reflection of this device.
It isn't a super high performance dual band device, it's a simple 'get me connected to the network at a fair speed' device. Mine runs at 150Mbs according to iwconfig.
My settings are as follows.
iface lo inet loopback
# Wired interface
iface eth0 inet static
# Wifi interface
iface wlan0 inet manual
iface default inet static

I got this to use on my raspberry pie, but it never work. I tried differnet linux OS but none of them worked with this model. When I tried to pull it out it broke apart on me.Published 2 months ago by SnowOwl
