Since it is a no-name brand machine, looking for firmware upgrades may be hard in coming. So the best way to find updates is simply to Google the specific model name WS-WN518N2 plus the word "firmware". Several sites would come up pointing you to available upgrades. One such URL would be [...] Although, the picture in the website is slightly different from the unit I have, that is, I have three led lights on my unit -- power, wifi signal, AP link; the one in the win-star.com website has only power and link. I experimented with the firmware available on the website with my unit, and the upload went smoothly. It would be best to save the settings first before updating firmware because it would reset the configuration of the unit.
I surmise the other wifi repeaters available on Amazon.com that look very much like this unit are actually one and the same model (e.g. USpeed WiFi Repeater/AP/Range Extender). Disappointing however would be the big price difference among the various sellers.
Performance wise, I would say that it is highly comparable to Repeaters/Extenders for the Wireless-N band. I need however to test it extensively in terms of how far its range would reach. Suffice to say that our two floor house is now fully covered with no dead spot. Connection is stable, in comparison to my disappointing experience with the Netgear WN300RP that dropped connection after a few hours of use and would need to be unplugged and plugged in to reconnect. The no-name brand wifi repeater stably repeats the Dlink 825 WiFi Router for more than 8 hours now. I need to see if this would be sustained for 24 hours. Moreover, sometimes one cannot help but doubt whether this economically priced gadget made from China would last me for at least more than a year until a new standard replaces N. But then again I worked with an expensive branded unit fairly recently and yet that conked out after only 3 weeks of use. So whether in the cheapo or expensive price range there will always be lemons.
Final recommendation: This No-Name Brand Repeater/AP/Extender is worth trying for anyone who would like to extend their home wifi network at an economical price. My brother pleased with my experience asked me to get two units more of this model for his own home network. I ordered the USpeed brand (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007MXGG5Q/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00) so that I can make comparisons. Anyway, I told him if it does not work for him, we could always return it to Amazon for a full refund.
With the addition of the repeater, I am truly amazed at the 12% gain in signal strength from a low of 60% to 72% and sometimes even higher.
Although I had installed many wireless and bluetooth devices, I tend to agree that the provided instructions were totally confusing and probably overdone.
I essentially installed the device by using my existing software that came with my wireless adapters, namely Realtek. I merely turned my computer on and searched for any new wireless device namely a WIFI Extender and added on as another profile. Nothing could be any easier than to just input your SSID and password, set your security settings, save and update. A truly easy experience.
Anyhow, for the price I paid for it @$24.00, I am really tempted to purchased 2 0r 3 more and just add one to every room in my home. Truly, it is that great of a product. In the meantime, I'll just enjoy the seamless coverage, something that has been a real nuisance to live with. Get yours while it is still cheap.
The device itself is a little tricky to setup at first. I had some instructions I had been given from a friend but without those I may have had some more trouble than I had. The web based setup is extremely bare bones but functional enough. Once it was setup, I plugged in a cable from my switch and it started working.
Over the last few months I have noticed issues with it from time to time. I occasionally have to power cycle the device for reasons I still can not figure out. If multiple devices are using data heavy things at the same time (downloading, streaming media) it will chug a bit.
I am planning on replacing it with a Cisco Aeronet AP that I have acquired recently due to the lack of stability from the hardware and need for increased range. I will likely be turning this into the Nintendo Streetpass Relay it was originally bought for which I am positive it will do a fantastic job for.
The ones I received (I purchased 2, and those are what I am rating) were NOT Sanoxy Brand. They stopped working and I had no Sanoxy support, obviously.
I wouldn't have minded them not being Sanoxy if it wasn't for 2 important things:
1. It says Sanoxy R on the title.
2. They stopped working.
At the moment I purchased it, the picture was of this same product BUT in a box with a YELLOW BAND (And that's what I received).
If the picture is of a box with a BLUE BAND and the product itself displays the brand: SANOXY, then all has been corrected.
