I bought this to convert a used 2.5 inch SATA laptop hard drive into a portable USB external hard drive. I also purchased an IDE version with very similar if not identical characteristics.
Pros:
1.) Price was very low (Mine was $6.24 USD with free shipping due to my order being over $35.). Best Buy wants $45 for a comparable product.
2.) The aluminum case is simple yet attractive, and assembles well with care. Take your time and do it right, and this will work for you.
3.) No extra peripherals needed, just hook up your drive to the adapter, assemble the case, and you're ready (with the proper software) to do what you need to do with your hard drive. Remember to always plug the single end of the USB cable into the enclosure, and the end with the two male connectors needs to be connected to your other device.
Cons:
1.) The included assembly screws are very small and easy to lose if you're careless. They're also self tapping with no pilot holes in the plastic, so make sure they're straight when you screw them in.
2.) There is *usually* extra space inside the enclosure after attaching the hard drive to the adapter. I solved this by taking the bubble wrap that the item was packaged in, cutting a small square of it and using that to fill the extra space between drive and enclosure. This stopped the HDD from rattling around inside, and gave the enclosure a more solid feel. If you go this route (or any other way of cushioning your HDD inside the enclosure), try to use as little as possible so your HDD will dissipate heat more easily into and through the enclosure. I've not had any overheating so far, though it is possible.
3.) The adapter itself is a simple little circuit board and I don't believe it can take too much force. Be as gentle as possible when affixing the adapter to your HDD and sliding it into the enclosure.
4.) There are no instructions included with the packaging, but anyone with some basic experience tinkering with PC hardware should have no trouble figuring it out. Both the SATA and IDE versions of this item really just only fit one way, and examining the adapter portion and your HDD's interface for a minute or two will make the assembly self-explanatory.
This item is a great solution for folks who have to get information from old HDD's, want more storage with old notebook/laptop hard drives laying around, etc., and the size makes it harder to lose than your typical flash memory stick. I'd recommend this to anyone who had need of a product like this. I give it 4 stars for being a decent, inexpensive piece of hardware that does what it's supposed to do, but with no frills. I received my HDD case enclosure on time according to the delivery information. I inspected the kit. Everything was included, even the screws that some reviewers didn't get. The enclosure fit my drive like a glove! I didn't have to modify anything during the mounting process. I did have to take the drive out of the enclosure and flip it. The first time the drive must have been upside in the case, because the screw holes didn't line up. Once I flipped the drive over and reinserted it, the holes lined up and I installed the screws, locking it into the case.I purchased this because my notebook died and I needed to transfer data to my new notebook. I now have an additional external drive now.
