Product Description

a. "Life Unframed": After three years of design and development, the Sayl Chair by San Francisco designer Yves Behar is ready for the public. The two innovations that make this chair so state-of-the-art are the ArcSpan and the Y-Tower. ArcSpan shapes the back and anchors the suspension fabric, while the Y-tower is the backbone that stretches the fabric and provides support. Behar was inspired by the Golden Gate suspension bridge, in awe of the way structures such as this carry such emense loads. b. Eco-Dematerialization:Sayl uses fewer parts and less materials than other chairs of its kind allowing it to be packaged in half-sized cartons. It will also be built in three global zones, shrinking its carbon footprint even more.

We purchased this chair for our home office less than one month ago. We've (well, I've) not been able to stay out of it. We're both writers, and unfortunately spend hours upon hours on the computer. Our lifestyles thus make long-term comfort a must. On average, I've spent six to eight hours a day in it and have no complaints. Rolls easily, looks great, and I put it together in less than 30 seconds (just put the chair in the base!). Just a few words on two things reviewers on other sites have noted: 1) the arms on the basic SAYL model do not move. That has absolutely been a non-issue. My arms either rest on my desk, on the chair arms, or ideally, in perfect ergonomic form on the keyboard (which sadly happens least). 2) The cost. Initially we too thought it a bit pricey, but found that Herman Miller kept coming up in reviews as the make of comfortable and relatively eco-friendly chairs. And, once we compared chairs from elsewhere (staples, office max, general online search), we realized we wouldn't make out dropping less than $250 for a decent chair. So we took a chance, and I tell you the truth, it's been worth every penny.

UPDATE:
Over a year later and still loving this chair! My husband now spends more time in it (I've graciously acquiesced my throne habitation), and he too loves it. Again, not many bells and whistles, but truly a great chair. I still average roughly 4-5 hours a day in it (dividing time between home and work office), with an occasional 8-hour day. Continues to be comfortable and everything works as if we'd just gotten it.

I took a big risk when purchasing this chair. There were no Herman Miller outlets in my area and I needed a good work chair that could help alleviate some of my back issues. Four-hundred dollars seems like a lot of money, because it really is, but compared to the rest of the Herman Miller lineup, this chair is a bargain. I have now been using it for about two weeks and it is much better than the basic task chairs that we have lying around our office. I purchased the most basic model and have found it to be just right. The arm rests do not adjust, but they are high enough for me to type comfortably at my desk (also they are covered in a rubbery material that makes them nice and malleable to the touch). The back of the chair is not particularly high, but it does not need to be. I am 5'11 and I find that it provides me with plenty of back support and moving area for my arms, so that I am not readjusting constantly. The mesh is also extremely breathable, which is a key point for me in the summers, since I wear a suit to work. Also, I think that that the chair is slowly improving my posture when sitting in place for hours at a time, because I find that I am hunching over my computer keyboard less and less. Overall, if you want to be comfortable, you can't really go wrong with this chair and if anything is wrong with it, you can always use Amazon's excellent return policy to get a full refund or take advantage of the 12-year Herman Miller warranty if it breaks.

I actually purchased this chair used on Craigslist (shhh, don't tell Amazon), in a custom color, but thought it would be a good idea to share my experience with the chair here for other potential customers, especially the notorious SQUEAK.

First of all, the chair is amazingly comfortable. Before purchasing, I went to a Room and Board furniture store to make sure it didn't disappoint, and it sure didn't. In fact, I personally felt it was more comfortable and to my liking than the HM Aeron and Embody, and several other HumanScale chairs they had at the store that cost more than 2x the Sayl. So I bought it used. I'm a PhD student, so I spend 20-30 hours a week at my desk. I get up frequently to go to class or to work in a lab, so I can't really comment on 40+ hours/ week in the chair, and 8-10 hours/day, but I feel like it would be comfortable for all of that time.

Second, it's beautiful. The chair I bought is white with grey back and a teal-ish seat. All standard, no extra features. It looks great, I'm excited to see it every day when I get in to work. Additionally, the materials are great. Contrary to other saying the back part feels like cheap plastic, I think it feels incredibly high quality. Sure, it's not a high-back leather chair, but I don't want that anyways. It stretches and moves with you, conforms to you, and feels plenty durable. It's super cool too, I don't get a sweaty back ever.

Finally, I want to address the SQUEAK issue I've heard a lot of others complain about. It's real. It squeaks like mad, and it's annoying. Very annoying. Especially when it's humid. Being an engineer, I thought I could just spray some light lubricant up in the inner workings and get rid of it but that didn't work. So I called Herman Miller up.

I am a grad student, so I spend a lot of time at my desk (I use a very simple IKEA desk). Unfortunately, I had back surgery in January and my cheap ($75) office chair wasn't very comfortable - to the point that I did as much work as I could in the library and student lounge. I did a lot of online research on more comfortable, ergonomic chairs, in hopes that I could prevent another expensive round of physical therapy in the future - this chair seemed like the best deal within my budget ($500).

The construction of the chair is excellent. It doesn't squeak or moan, small parts don't fall off, and it has a 12 year warranty. Herman Miller products are used at many corporations, universities, and government agencies because of their reliability - overall construction is a 10/10. I especially like the material used for the armrests, which is soft but very sturdy - and of course the material in the chair's famous suspension back.

Overall, the chair is quite comfortable for long periods of use. It has a nice, controlled recline and plenty of seat padding. The seat is not made of suspension material, and I think that was a good decision, as the harder suspension material only really works as back support. The narrow back allows you to stretch your shoulders regularly. And indeed, the seat back is the real revelation: it conforms perfectly to your back, while still keeping you cool and comfortable. I didn't get the adjustable armrests, and I don't regret it - the standard height is perfect for me (I'm 5'8"), and I have not experienced any carpal tunnel thus far. Comfort is about a 9/10, though I doubt any office chair could be a 10/10 (I haven't tried the Embody or Steelcase's top of the line chair, however).
