Based on Rudyard Kipling's story: 'The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes,' Scape takes place in the early 1800s on the Oregon Trail. Indians attack Morrowbie's caravan and he becomes separated from his wife. He walks alone through the open frontier, searching for her, when he wanders into a remote colony in the forest for the mentally ill. Once in the colony, no one can leave; a mysterious and fearsome army soldier guards the boundary between the colony and freedom. With the fate of his wife looming, Morrowbie must attempt the impossible: escape.

Which leads on to the major faults in the film. Firstly at 65 minutes, it is too long. It is based on a short story and probably would have benefited from being around 45 minutes in duration. Story wise, the last act drags the earlier sequences down. The antagonist is revealed too early and would have been more effective if it remained a fast moving shadowy figure rather than a full on psuedo-creature. Also its purpose in the story was revealed far too early also. Keeping it unknown till the end of the last act would have added to the earlier supernatural connotations.
Other than that, all I can say is give this a go if you find it at a suitable price. Just don't expect the usual 'western ' with shootouts and indian attacks. In this one they couldn't even afford to use a horse.
