The smallest SD I had sitting around was 16GB, and Windows 95 OSR2 can only address 2GB per partition, with a max of 4 partitions per disk. I had no problem creating 4x 2GB partitions theough this adapter.
This means a few things - this adapter is fine with low-level disk calls, so anything you might want to do with the "spoofed" disk will just work, no need to prepare partitions, filesystems, etc before installing the card. BE AWARE though, if you do this the filesystem will NOT be available to other OSes unless you install the whole adapter.
Runs at the full speed available to the chipset, which is 15MB/s. It sits around 12.5, which means it is just about perfect for 100Mbit ethernet.
At the end of the day, my project was just for grins to see if I could get it working, but if you need to get an OLD system working for an important reason, this thing would be a life saver.
**In case you are wondering****
While modern hard drives are still compatible with PI/O on paper, I have not found one that works correctly in this system once everything is installed. They try, but random errors start popping up within hours and the partitions corrupt within days. Been running on the adapter for 2~ weeks now withh no problems
I purchased this to bring an old DOS-based 486 PC back to life to play old games on. Works as intended and is pretty easy to get going if you're handy with old computer technology from the 1990's. The only reason I'm giving it 3 stars is due to the lack of mounting hardware for it. It's an odd size, so finding some kind of caddy for it has proved elusive so far. I'm not really keen on the idea of just hanging it off an IDE cable and calling it good. I would have paid extra just to have some mounting hardware with it. Some kind of bracket to fit where the expansion cards and easy access to swap the SD card without taking off the lid would be perfect.
Use it daily in my Pentium 3 class desktop. The convenience of swapping sd cards makes using multiple retro operating systems easy. My bios allows this item to dial in full UDMA settings IDE bus offers getting full potential of 133 MB/s out of today's high speed SD cards. Boot times were great all in the hardware you pair with this device.
This card does not have a way to select master or secondary. I tried using a normal 2 drive ide cable and my computer couldn’t see it. When I switched to a master only cable it worked perfectly.
Works perfectly with no setup needed. Currently using it in my old windows 98 pc that I mess around with occasionally. Only thing to note is that you may want to put electrical tape below where ever you plan on mounting it to make sure nothing gets shorted out or anything
I used a 4GB flash to replace a dead 3.6G HDD. It's faster than the HDD. It worked OK. I wish there was an included mount bracket for a standard size HDD bay. It worked OK.
I use this product on both PC's and Macs and it works great! It's a no brainer. Price is extremely fair for what it does. Very please with the product.
I needed this product to bring an old Megatouch bar entertainment system back to life after the old IDE hard drive died. Even though the motherboard was technically a 486 it was still able to recognize this device as a hard drive. (Using 16GB FAT32 formatted SD card). Next I will replace my original XBOX hard drive and Playstation 2 hard drive with this device!
Excellent drop-in replacement for old IDE HDDs. I like that you can give it either a normal MOLEX or 4-pin floppy for power. It seems to work best for computers from the late 90s onward, anything older and the BIOS might not be compatible.
I ordered 3 of these and brand new SD cards. they simply do not function. tested in 3 IDE computers, and 3 known good tested SD cards. Utter junk. Don't waste your money.
