This is a basic DVD player which is fine for the needs I had I have two disappointments though. First is I cannot get any USB data to play, not a killer though that was one feature I wanted.the second however is worse when I was setting up the video quality playback I set it for 1080 and now an unsupported mode square is only thing coming up. I can still play a movie but NONE of the remote functions except the eject button. I hope someone has an answer for this glitch. I did try the only thing the manual says which is unplug it for a 1/2 hrs and it's suppose to reset....nope did not ... If customer service contacts me I will change my review rating

If you have an issue with remote it's because the batteries aren't making connection. Try folding up a small piece of aluminum foil in each of the top battery inserts or just find batteries with a taller head on top. I was using Duracell and they wouldn't work...until I filled the gap with aluminum foil! Buyer beware this model is no longer manufactured by Sylvania so it is not covered under warranty! You get what you pay for....luckily I was able to find a solution using aluminum foil.

Get what you pay for. It is generally functional. The remote and buttons can be a little temperamental. They don't always respond to the first press.

I bought this some time ago with a view to playing my exercise DVDs in my bedroom so I could get in shape. I have officially given up on it today, and will be puting it out for the trash. If the garbabe collectors would like to take it home then they are very welcome to it. But they will be disappointed when they get it home and find it. just. doesn't. work. I have tried countless DVDs and they may start out playing for a few minutes and then the disk gets stuck, you can see pixels all over the screen, and it just won't go any more. I am so fed up of giving it another chance...and hoping that one day, one DVD will work.

I'm writing this review so that others have a clearer picture that these units are cheap for a reason. You have a 50/50 chance of it being a paperweight rather than a DVD player.

I ordered this in April of 2013. I have used it 3 times since then, all working fine. When I went to use this on Friday (9/6/13), it would not work. The disk was cleaned, the DVD player was cleaned - nothing but VHS-style flickering. I tried three different DVD's to find that none of them worked - all three of them nearly brand new DVDs.

Also, if you want a DVD player with any kind of controls, this is not the player for you. Not only does it NOT come with a remote, there are NO skip buttons for back or forward. Just play/pause, power, and open/close.

This was NOT worth the money I paid for it. I wish I had used it more frequently in the first 30 days to know I would need to return it. Now I am stuck with a worthless player and am out $30 that could have gone to a far better player.

Wanted a simple inexpensive dvd player. It does okay, but the remote doesn't work. Tried a universal remote, no go. Returning.

Actually rather nice, once I got it working. Most functions require the remote, which either works great, or, not at all. The remote has a design error, there is a critical dimension in the battery compartment that prevents Duracell batteries from making contact! Enercell rechargeables work fine. I am quite happy with the purchase, once I found batteries that fit.

At first it started with a vertical line about two inches wide of incorrect (zoomed or flipped) video down the center of the screen. Then the read head started jumping in the DVD player and it laid two nice scratches across one of my DVDs rendering it unplayable. I would spring the extra money and upgrade to a Sony or something that you know has a reputable name. I thought I found one with "sylvania" however, I discovered that this DVD player is made by one company (probably in China) and then sold to Many different brands. I've seen it as a Sylvania, as a Proscan, and as at least one or two other "brand" names.

STAY AWAY!

This works fine and had the most features for tyhe lowest price of all of the units I considered. At least $30 less than all other new (as opposed to refurbished) players I found that had an HDMI out port. No reason whatsoever to spend more unless you want to upgrade to Blu-Ray. I am using with a 28" 720p HiDef TV. At that size (or at 32 inches) there is no need for anything more sophisticated. Spending more would be a total waste. Completely satisfied.
