For this particular product, the type of material used in the manufacture and creation of the product seems to be of very good quality. One must consider that for any product of this type there is a balance between the type of material used and the cost that is to be passed on to the consumer. I think for this product that balance has been met fairly well and I believe that the product will meet the expectations of most buyers.
Finally, as with many products of this type, the value that a consumer sees is dependent on the expectation. When I ordered this product my expectations were moderate, especially because of the price. In an age where we demand low price but often want high quality, it is often best if we expect moderate to good quality instead. I did that with this product as was pleasantly surprised to find that the quality was at least good, if not just a tad bit better than good. For that reason, and those set out above, I'd make a recommendation to buy this product.
I work on guns and watches. It is capable of dealing the "heavier" blows need for guns and yet capable of being used to make the "intermediate" taps needed for watches. If you only do light things like watches you will need another VERY LIGHT HAMMER.
To me the interchangeable heads is the best feature of this hammer, it allows the use of softer / non Mar materials which can be replaced when worn. When using the more brittle heads protective eye wear should be used.
I haven't put a lot of miles on this hammer, but I know others who have. And unless you do extremely light work this hammer should last a very long time and be the only hammer you will need.
First, the handle.... wow... just.... wow. A 10 year old rubbing a stick on a sidewalk could have produced a better finish. I literally got a splinter just from handling it straight out of the package. It was stained (ok, cosmetic, but ok) and then had some attempt at a finish put on... it was glossy in places and non existant in others. I used a little 180 grit sandpaper, and some boiled linseed oil to remedy this, but I shouldn't have had to do even that.
Secondly, the head. It appears to be GLUED on. I wouldn't say hot glue, as the residue was a bit gummier. The made an effort to make it appear that the head was actually epoxied on but molding in a plastic cap on the top. Also there was all manner of grime and metal chips / dirt under the installed faces. was able to clean them up, but again, I shouldn't have had to.
Lastly, the interchangeable faces. I can't tell a bit of difference between the plastic, polymer and rubber ones. Well, beyond the color. They have the same weight, the same texture, feel, tone when striking something and bounce. The packaging didn't even give any clue. I am *assuming* that the black one is rubber. In fairness, that one is made ever so slightly different than the other 2. But you have to REALLLY look for it.
All this being said, it will work for what I need to do. I don't understand how this is so poorly put together, as doing this properly would have been as easy as the crappy way they did do.
It is small and weighs only a few ounces, so it is more of a tapping hammer than a pounding hammer.
The handle seems to be of a strong hardwood such as hickory, and appears to be solidly cemented to the aluminum top. The heads are one copper, one brass, one rubber, and two plastic, one red and one white, which otherwise seem identical to me.
To change heads, you simply unscrew the current head, and screw on the new one. It takes a half minute (or less).
So, if you want a hammer for the same use as I wanted, then I would recommend this one. But if you are going to use it a lot, then a multi-purpose tool like this one is probably not the best choice..
