Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Waterfell (Book 1 in the Aquarathi series):
"A coming-of-age story complicated by regicide, superhuman powers, the duty to protect a kingdom and one hot surfer. A fantastical surf-and-turf romance." ~ Kirkus Reviews
"Howard has crafted a page-turning blend of magical realism and fantasy, set in an American high school starring a main character who morphs from sea monster to gorgeous sixteen-year-old with ease. Plot shifts, surprises, and a love affair not yet fully realized sets readers up for the second in the fascinating trilogy."
~  Booklist
Praise for Oceanborn (Book 2 in the Aquarathi series):
"A brilliant sequel that managed to top the first, Oceanborn was a fantastic YA read. The stakes were upped, the characters grew, the romance deepened, and the ending left me wanting more. I absolutely LOVED this book!" ~ Imagine A World
"Second book in the series is a winner! Howard knocks it out of the park yet again with OCEANBORN!" ~ Fresh Fiction Magazine

I love when there are novellas of secondary characters, especially one close to the main. In this book, it is Speio, the stoic protector of Nerissa, for whom living on the land is a particular brand of hell. He wants Nerissa to man up and return to her kingdom to claim her responsibility, but is frustrated with her stubbornness. It is kind of refreshing to see this from his perspective, with his longing for the sea and his Aquarathi form. Even with his loyalties to the sea, he can’t help being tied to the land in the form of Anya, a troubled runaway girl. She is quite persistent in keeping him out of her troubles but he wants to see what makes her sad. Their story is sweet and sexy at the same time, and you really feel for Speio; he is torn between duty and love but knows what he will have to choose in the end. The ending is sad but hopeful; I feel particularly bad for him and wonder whether he will find her. Okay, that was spoiler-y but sorry, I had to discuss it!

I would like to thank Amalie Howard for gifting me with this Kindle novella, after I attended an author chat sponsored by Colleen Houck. SeaMonster is the perfect glimpse into the life of Speio Marin, one of the characters from Waterfell and Oceanborn. As a character on the periphery of Nerissa's inner circle, Speio is always around but not well known. As the son of the guardians for the queen to be, he is there to provide advice and protect Nerissa when it is necessary. He is usually seen more as an outsider, but this book changes that. Speio gets involved with a human girl, Anya, and SeaMonster is their story. I feel more connected to his character and cannot wait to read more about Speio in the next installment of the Waterfell series.

If you've already read Amalie Howard's delightful WATERFELL, you will *love* SEAMONSTER. And if you haven't yet read WATERFELL, you're going to want to pick it up the moment you finish this little gem of a novella featuring a super-hot boy, lots of action, and shapeshifting seamonsters! The action takes place just before the events in WATERFELL, and it's particularly interesting to learn more about Nerissa (WATERFELL's heroine) from Speio's point-of-view. Well-crafted and fast paced, it was an absolutely delightful read!

I love aliens and the alien world Amalie has created is so unique. The Aquarithi are so awesome. The transformation she describes in her writing is so creepy and beautiful at the same time. The love story had me swooning. A must read and I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars.
