We need plants to survive on earth in so many ways. As the environment changes plants can endure harmful stress. This book is the result of Rishikesh Upadhyay's teaching and research at the Department of Botany at Haflong Government College in India.
Some of the things plants endure include drought, chemical agents, mechanical stress, magnetic fields, flash-flooding, freezing and radiation stress.
A few of the topics this book discusses involves the depletion of forests, temperature changes, lower plant yields, photosynthesis, pollution and freezing tolerance.
There are lots of photographs of plants under different conditions. This will interest anyone who is concerned about the environment or who just loves plants and wants to know more about their survival on planet earth.
I do need to say that by reviewing this book I am not endorsing any of the authors quoted in this book. The quotes are fine, but I do not recommend a book by one of the authors.
Rishikesh Upadhyay has done an excellent job with making this book understandable to the general public.
I recommend this highly as an educational and entertaining read.

A phenomenal work about the fragile relationship between plants and the environment

I am not a scientist; hence I am hardly qualified to speak about the vast amount of scientific information provided in this book. However, as a person who cares about the environment, I can only express my awe and admiration for this remarkable book. It is a comprehensive discussion of the multilayered aspects that affect plant life and our environment and a compendium that deserves to be referenced by experts in this field for years to come, with an excellent index and extensive notes and source explanations. The author addresses complex issues such as the influence of magnetic fields, heavy metal stress in plants, the impact of salinity, and plants’ response to radiation to name just a few of the important subjects in this work. Only when we have such thorough and careful scientific analyses available, will we have the means at our disposal for addressing the vast challenges threatening our environment and ultimately our very existence we are facing in the present and in the years to come. Highly recommended.

The Secrets of Plants in the Environment is a comprehensive, compact, and convicting analysis of plant life. The book is a sober combination of facts backed by extensive research, fluidly presenting a narrative that plants, just like humans, are very relational and perceptive. The resilient personality of plants that clearly comes alive will not only resonate with biologists, environmentalists, or climate change enthusiasts, but with every human as we live in variances of life. The author has an in-depth understanding of plant ecology and describes their symbiotic growth processes in a vivid yet factual way, taking us on a journey of how plants respond to various natural and external stimuli. Whoever reads the book will realize there is more to plants than just growing, and that their development is an intentional process determined by a myriad of factors- which everyone should understand in order to maximize behaviours and capacities that favour plant growth in our spaces. It will also help one realize the essence of plants beyond their agricultural context, and behold their role in supporting the very human life, and other species in the environment. This book truly makes one to appreciate the earth's flora as it offers novel and accurate insights regarding how plants physiologically, biologically, and chemically fight to adapt in unfavourable environments they may grow in, just to sustain life. This remains a relevant discourse especially when the globe is combating climate change and food shortage realities.

Rich in scientific details, the author's knowledge of and passion for the subject matter is evident. Filled with charts, photos, and interesting quotes, the reader comes to learn how plants are impacted by things such as temperature change, chemicals, light, pollution, drought and more.
As would be expected in such a body of work, it cites other research articles and books on the topic, and includes a healthy list of suggested reading materials.
As a hobby gardener, I was interested in this book because it helps increase yields. The challenge for someone like me, who is more brown thumb than green, is that there is so much in-depth information that was beyond me. Some understanding of botany would be helpful.
Regardless of my limited knowledge, The Secret of Plants in the Environment is a fascinating read. It takes a while to digest all the included information, but if you're seriously looking at becoming more self-sustaining, this is a book you'll want to read through.
I received a digital copy from the author. This review contains my honest opinions, which I have not been compensated for in any way.

This author is obviously passionate about his research subject, teaching, and discussing environmental issues. Those who have a biology background and study plant life and the various stressors that affect our planetary wide biological diversity should be able to find some aspect of this research fascinating and run with further research and discussion. Like all good researchers, the author includes vast lists of other papers and books to follow up with on the various aspects of his research. Seventeen chapters give the reader a peek into environmental stressors on plant life--everything from radiation to flooding, drought, pollution, and even electricity. While I am not a plant biologist, I did appreciate the design, illustrations, and thoughtful points that will surely lead to discussion and plans of action in areas of high impact. This book is not for the general readers.

He also gives insights into the beginning stages of plant cycles, environmental stress physiology and adaptation mechanisms, all covered in a total of seventeen chapters, with each chapter beginning with a noteworthy quote. Moreover, the use of tables, pie charts and other informative illustrations gives more emphasis to each chapters.
Besides serving the purpose of delight and arousing curiousity, the book is a repository of knowledge for nature lovers and all who loves to know in depth about the secret of plants. The well packed pieces of information provided in the book will be a true treasure for aspiring scientists and research scholars in the field of Botany. This book really helped me a lot. My mom loves the plants and after reading this book now I can tell my mom what affects our plants and can tell her some tips for the natural growth of our plants.
This book is recommended to plants lovers and who want to explore and study plants. It seems like an Academic book but everything in this book about plants and their development has been sorted out in the simple language.
The content is well researched. That's a short read better if you read it slowly to get the information properly. And kudos to the illustrations and pictures that make it easier to understand the processes and what the author wants to convey.
So what are waiting for? Grab it.

Caring for Plants.

Plant analogy is one of the most important fields of study if we take a look at the well being of the environment. This book The Secret of Plants In The environment takes good approach to make people understand the importance of caring plants in the environment, if Global warming and Pollution are to be the stopped with urgent immediacy. One of the best aspects that I like about this book is that every chapter has quoted some wonderful words related to plants in the environment by various scientists from the field of botany. This work has taken a beginners approach to make students and general readers understand the behavior of plants and how they are to be treasured by the human society and the environment. The chapters which I like the most in this book are the chapters on Mechanosensing in Plants, Temperature in Plant Change, Responses of plants to light and Electric Stimulus to Plants. According to me, these chapters with it's use of pictorial representation and flow chart of plant seeds and their ways towards germination and growth, has become one of the best and most important aspects of the book that I urge all the readers to concentrate upon. This book is a brilliant work of science and though I am not a science student, this book was highly enjoyed by me while I was reading it and helped me understand how to take good care of work. This book also deftly underlines how governments and communities of people should work to achieve a healthy plant biosphere and environment. And also, for science students this book is an academic excellence in the sense that it provides certain helpful guidance also towards how plants behalf in chemical reactions as well.

“This plant represents what’s happening inside of you. The world, like the soil, is cold and dark – layered with a history of destruction and death. You were planted in this world to rise and above it. Do you not see? The very existence of this darkness gives you the opportunity to become a light to the world.”
-Seth Adam Smith
This is the first thing I read from this book and I would say it could not have started better. I really liked this quote. Coming to the book, this book is about Plants and how they change or affected by the environment. It has 17 chapters, each explaining different factors like Temperature, Heat, pollution, and aspects about plant growth and survival like mineral nutrients, Freezing, their adaptive methods. It also has illustrations at times, which helps to understand the concepts better.
I would suggest going slow with this book or read a few chapters per day in order to actually enjoy and also intake as much information as possible. Because this book is so informative and to read in one sitting can be overwhelming, which can also lead to missing out on the content. I thought this would give me a textbook vibe, but I am glad it did not. But yeah, this is informative but not in a (boring) textbook kind of way, this applies only if you are genuinely interested in plants and have basic knowledge about them. It does get technical often. But the terminologies were explained towards the end. It may disrupt the flow, but in the end, it is all about learning. Isn’t it?
I would recommend this book if you have done science or really interested in Horticulture or just someone who likes plants, enthusiastic to learn something new. But I felt like the target audience is mostly people from scientific backgrounds, especially Botany. So, consider that before picking this up.
