The original SENSE-ation Harness is a no-pull dog harness that works wonders for positive reinforcement dog training, or just taking gentler walks with your pooch. An instruction booklet comes with all SENSE-ation Harnesses. The SENSE-ation is similar to the SENSE-ible Harness in design, however the SENSE-ation uses a custom Softouch polyester webbing for added comfort. The SENSE-ation Harness also features Duraflex plastic hardware, instead of metal. The O-rings on the chest and sides are nickel plated steel for extra durability. The curved side-release buckle and strap keepers are a plus. The girth strap, also called a "belly strap" comes in a coordinating color, making it easy to identify, and therefore easier to put on. The SENSE-ation Harness stops your dog from pulling, without choking, stress or otherwise harming your pet. You can use i right away - there is no acclimation period. Best of all, the SENSE-ation Harness is a favorite of positive reinforcement dog trainers and humane societies worldwide. Awarded "Gear of the Year" by The Whole Dog Journal, 2003. Using a flexible measuring tape, measure from just behind the front legs all the way around your dog. You are measuring the circumference of the body just behind the front legs, like performing a chest or belt measurement on a human. X-Large 1 Inch Width 39 - 50 Inch girth*. We used the Easy Walk harness for years but I kept noticing that the dogs would sort of turn away from the harness when I would put the harness on them for their walks. You would think they'd be super psyched to go outside, but instead they looked unhappy. Finally I read something in a blog about the Easy Walk's martingale-style harness not being very comfortable for the dogs (i.e. painful) so I looked for another solution. After looking through a bunch of front-clasp style harnesses (it really does help with the pulling) I settled on this one due to the reviews, simplicity of putting it on and the soft nylon webbing. I've now used this harness for close to 4 years and my dogs no longer turn away from the harness when putting it on. And the soft nylon webbing truly is soft so I know my dogs are comfortable even when we go on long hikes where it stays on for hours.
Also I like how the product literature that comes with the harness shows you how this thing should fit on the dogs. Basically it doesn't matter much whether the front of the harness is tight or flops around -- though it should go up and down easily when the dog sits so s/he is comfortable sitting. What matters most is the fit of the top (back of dog) so that the rings on the side sit behind your dog's shoulders. I realized that with the Easy Walk I had not positioned the harness further back enough or high enough. The side rings should also positioned a bit higher than where the chest ring is when the dog is standing.
Anyway one of the teeth on the underside broke off (though the remaining other tooth stayed so the harness still worked) so I finally bought another one.
Prior to purchasing, I read several consumer complaints about how easy it is for a dog to get out of this harness - but the included instructions clearly recommend you clip your leash to the harness AND to your dog's collar, so you have a backup just in case. Our dog is reasonably well behaved and doesn't *try* to get out of this harness, so we haven't had this issue, but if she did get out, the leash would still be attached to her collar, so no issue there. Just follow the instructions :)
However, she, immediately, took to the Sense-ation harness and did not show any resistance or irritation to wearing it. Not tight, not loose and she seemed not to even notice that she was wearing it. Holding a short leash was enough for her to "sense" the tight leash needed to be slackened, so she would pull ahead very little or not at all. Whether it was discomfort or other sensation she felt, I do not know. But it works... right from the get-go!
She responds to a curt but not loud, "Hey!" So, in the beginning, just a slight tug on the leash while saying "Hey" was enough to "tell" her to come back a bit and pull abreast rather than forging ahead. After a while, "Hey" was enough. Every so often, if she keeps abreast, a gentle "Good Girl" reinforces the behavior. With squirrels, I wouldn't place a bet yet as she displays distinct hunting behaviour (stalking, pointing).
We clean/disinfect the collar by:
-- soaking 10-15 minutes in a mixture of water (1 qt), dishwashing liquid (1/2 tsp), distilled white vinegar (2 tbsp), household bleach (2 tbsp) (do outdoors if good ventilation is not available)
-- vigorously shaking/agitating for about a minute while soaking
-- rinsing well in fresh cold water
-- hanging dry (in front of a fan works well)
