Wow! Unexpected challenge for all ages!

I like mental challenges, so I actually waffled over getting this game because it looked too simple. Not so! Don't let the basic shapes fool you too. We played it with four people, but it can be played alone or with ten people, doesn't matter. With four players, each game took about 20-30 minutes.

Anyone at any age can enjoy this game and find a set or two. Our foursome had two in their mid-20s and two in their mid-50s. This game is perfect for a family game night with middle-schoolers too. It's a great mental exercise disguised as a fun game that can teach efficiency, awareness, and perseverance.

The game starts with twelve cards face-up on the table. The directions say this is fast-paced, so I was thinking something akin to the card games Spoons or Slap-Jack. In reality, the only things moving quickly are your eyes. You have to look at the cards to find sets of 3 that match three of the four characteristics, or none at all. So you study every card (it's not uncommon for the group to sit for three or four minutes silently staring at the table) and eventually find a set. It's not a race to that card, you simply have to shout "Set" before anyone else does. After that, you can take your time grabbing your cards--you already have first claim, so there's no rush. However, you get penalized when you're wrong (and you will be wrong, frequently), so be careful.

Scoring are as follows: you count the number of sets you found. That's it. But remember, for each wrong guess, you lose a set (we put them into a discard/burn pile). In each game we played, the winner had four or five at the end. It's not a high-scoring game, so if the leader only has a few sets, everyone is in the game until the very end.

Family game or play solo! This is a new favorite for us!

Ready for a game that's both fast paced, and requires concentration and focus? Looking to pull your hair out while trying to find matches only to be ecstatic and over the moon when your persistence pays off? This is the game for you! And apparently me too, wow. I loved playing this game with my family! We have a six year old that we're trying to help concentrate, focus, and persevere more and this was just the game we needed. Finding the sets across all four domains (all different or the same shapes, all different or the same numbers, all different or the same patterns, all different or the same colors) seems confusing at first and it really makes you think. Instead of just finding matches, you're now looking for aspects of each card that are either all the same, or all different on each domain. For this reason, I recommend first playing it by yourself as an adult before trying to teach a kid how to play the game. I made the mistake of getting super excited and introducing it on our game night having never played it before and my six year old lost interest quickly because I couldn't even figure it out! We tabled the game for that night and I learned it on my own and brought it back out the next game night. This time I was able to teach her how to play and it was a blast and less confusing for both of us!

Another cool thing about this game? You can play it by yourself! I work with kids and adults with various anxiety disorders and ADHD and this game is great for all of them! For anxiety, it can help take your mind off of the anxiety and put your focus to something in the "here and now", and for ADHD it helps develop focus, persistence, working memory and general executive functioning skills. This game is so affordable, I would argue that this needs to be in every classroom!

One of the very best family games ever

Set deserves the awards it has won. Always popular with my family, I've now started giving it as a gift to other families, e.g., when invited to dinner. (Kids can't drink a bottle of wine!) It is a way to encourage quality family time and stimulate logic and perception. You can play for 10 minutes or for hours--each game is fairly short. Why give a stuffed animal or a board game that depends on luck when you can help kids develop valuable thinking habits while they have fun? Another plus: it is small enough to take on vacations. I do hope the company changes back to selling the cards in a package that includes a handy plastic box for keeping them neat. This is one of my two top games to give children. (The other is Amazing Labyrinth.)

Learning made fun

Initially, this was purchased as a tutoring tool for my "tween" facing learning challenges, but the whole family was drawn in. This game is not a respecter of persons, age, or level of education. This GAME helps keep your mind sharp. It enhances processing, logic, reasoning, order, & sequencing, but in a fun way. Level of difficulty can be vary, based on your preferences and skill level. Can be played alone as a variation of solitaire where two cards are flipped face up and the necessary card necessary to complete a "set," (based on shape/color/texture) can be stated aloud. It can also be played with a group, having each person proclaim their found set amongst any number of cards laid face up. Many other variations are adapted to this card game. Highly recommended by a successful tutoring program, but has been adopted as a family favorite. There is also an app of this game that can be downloaded (bonus game for road trips without the cards).

Love/hate relationship

Fun game for small groups, but didn't stay fun for too long here. Unfortunately it was a love-it or hate-it thing. From our game play here, it seems like some people just don't "get it" very well and others are great at it and so consistently win. You either have a mind for seeing shape patterns quickly or not. This is interesting, but not too good for a game that everyone will enjoy and want to keep playing. It also requires you to be faster than everyone else at the table, to snatch up matches before them, which is another style of game-play that you either love or hate.
