This series is intense! I've binge read books 1-3 because I just could not get enough of these fascinatingly flawed characters amid a myriad of dark conspiracies and deadly plots in this truly messed up world of Karina Espinosa's Lycans. This series is a raw and gritty urban fantasy with a ton of sharp edges, startling surprises, gut wrenching injustice, and so much action at times your head will spin. But man, oh man, is it worth the ride. This not the fun, escapist, and entertaining love at first sight, Happily Ever After, sassy heroine gets the sexy Alpha male hero type story that so many of us (myself included) absolutely adore... and YET, it kept me hoping for those things with each page that I read.
The author delivers a heroine with a quick temper, smart mouth and snarky sense of humor who suddenly finds herself immersed in a secret world for which she is wholly unprepared. Despite her many failings and flaws, I was entirely captivated by Mackenzie's sense of honor, loyalty, and strong desire to help the downtrodden and overcome inequality. Despite all of the danger, intrigue, death and destruction, there is TONS of sizzle in this story. Thanks in large part to the two sexy Lycan males who stir Mackenzie’s heart, inflame her libido, and outrage her sense of fairness at every turn. Despite their many flaws, these males constantly redeem themselves (to varying degrees) because of their devotion to the heroine.
Having said all of that, let me warn you this series will make the reader FEEL. And not all of those feelings are pleasant or enjoyable. I often found myself feeling frustrated, disgusted, outraged, heartbroken and horrified. But I also often found myself chuckling, pleasantly surprised, eager to see what will happen next, and cheering over the victories – large and small.
I will say that while I easily give book one 4.5 stars, I felt that books two and three were better. So, if you find yourself struggling to get through book one at times, hang in there. It’s worth the work. I’ve added this series to my WATCH LIST, meaning I will be watching for book four – impatiently.
