- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2020I initially shied away from this book because it uses the term "SHTF". I realize why the author used this term, but my experience with people who use the abbreviation "SHTF" was that eventually you find out there were door gunners on the space shuttle - in other words, they were full of exactly what they say is going to hit the fan. However, I have read a lot of Ms. Luther's work, and I have bought her books and lists, so I took a chance on Selco's dissertation.
I am glad that I did, this is an excellent book. I ended up binge reading the entire book, finishing it Saturday afternoon after receiving 24 hours earlier. I haven't been that captivated by anything since "Firefly" came out on DVD. There is no glory or glamour in these 480 pages, in fact he will deflate your balloon occasionally.
Frankly, this was a herculean task for the author. Describing surviving an elevator malfunction, for example, would not require many pages because the number of variables and possible outcomes are practically finite. Selco's topic had nearly infinite variables and infinite outcomes but he manged to distill them into understandable topics that impart a great deal of real world wisdom.
If you are an survivalist / prepper fiction author, just stop, your brand of fiction is mostly awful, but if you insist on pressing on, please send your manuscript to Mr. Begovic and have him inject some reality. Spare me another prepper fictional protagonist that always has just the right tool and has a BOL with 10 conex boxes full of gear surreptitiously buried.
In the introduction you are advised that English is not the native tongue of the author. This is not a problem and I believe it is actually a strength - his unique way of phrasing makes ideas stick in your head. He reshuffled my deck of cards, so to speak.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2022This book is full of horrific, short stories with Selco living around Sarajevo 1992-95. Each one has a lesson in tragedy that is invaluable. Incredibly hard times that brought out the worst in some, the best in others, and strained ones ability to innovate and adapt or die. Selco, you have my solid respect brother.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2020He has a practical approach to surviving in cities at war where largely law and order are a vague memory and gangs run everything. Good practical advice about what to do to keep breathing and what will get you killed -- quickly. How to barter safely and without getting ripped off. How cheap life can be under these dangerous conditions. In short, how to stay alive when you're not accustomed to fending for yourself. Only criticism is that the book badly needs a line editor to correct English spelling and grammar, especially in late chapters which had the feel of rushed publication pressures. But a very good book anyway. Selco is someone we all ought to listen to and heed now that urban violence is a thing in America.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2020Anyone who is this slightest bit interested in surviving a societal collapse brought about for any reason at all needs to read this book. Anyone who prepares, is interested in learning about prepping or wants to know where to start prepping needs to read this book. Anyone who wants to cut through all the conflicting information, theories and Hollywood stereotypes of apocalyptic events needs to read this book. This is where reality, told by a survivor who lived it, hits the oscillating air current distribution device by cutting to the chase, holding nothing back and telling it as it is. At times it's a difficult read, in part due to the fact that English is not the Authors first language, but mostly because it's very real. Not gory, just very, very raw. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2024I've been following Selco since his blog went up and have read his first book a couple of times now. This book is similar to the first book, the stories are a bit more random but still worthwhile. The synopsis segments at the end of each chapter are interesting and do a good job of bringing the story in to a perspective of sorts.
Overall, worth the price and worth reading. Selco has a no frills style that at times is both sad and funny, but never dull.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2020This book is written by Soko with English being his second language but you need to look past this for the content he provides. His writing shows it but this book will really wake you to to what a society collapse is really like. He lived it, he breathed it and his experiences show it. This is by far the most realistic SHTF book I have EVER seen. It's shocking with the things that happened to him and his friend, however its real and will change you mind on many things you thought about SHTF and how to prepare for it. If you are a prepper or are starting to think about it, this book is a must
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2023This book is a blunt and brutally honest illustration of SHTF, through the eyes of several survivors. Selco takes you through the imagery, human nature and tough questions of what happens in tragedy.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2020Most books written about survival are based on speculation and conjecture. Selco has been there. He knows what it is like to go through a SHTF event and survive. He shares many stories from those days and his friends, Daisy and Toby, respected instructors and authors in their own right, help us apply lessons from Selco's experiences to our own possible situations. I was already reading a couple of books when I received this book and they had to wait as this one called to me and I couldn't put it down.

HugoReviewed in Mexico on July 5, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Un texto valioso para comprender una situación SHTF
No esperes una novela rosa, este es un texto crudo, con las memorias de lo que implicó sobrevivir en una ciudad sitiada durante un conflicto armado. Sin duda una herramienta para intentar dimensionar una situación de ese tipo. Es un libro increíble.

A wake up call for the, "I've got a gun" and nothing else prepper types.
It's clear to me that having friends, family, and a network is key to survival if the SHTF.
