I had considered one of those hammocks which you can enclose yourself in via a zipper, bug net, and rain fly. However, I could not bring myself to spend the money required. Instead I used a tarp and a second line of paracord to create a pseudo tent. It worked well and I was pleased with the results. I was further pleased with how cheaply I was able to stay dry and comfortable.
This hammock is made of parachute like material and is incredibly light and was able to be packed into a very small package (including hooks and rope). This is super beneficial when backpacking to a primitive camp site as we always do. I also appreciate the bright colored accents on each end of the hammock. It make is easy to see in less than optimum lighting conditions. Overall, VERY pleased with the La Siesta Colibri.
The La Siesta Travel Hammock Double is a gathered-end hammock made of parachute nylon. It has the same exact measurements as the ENO double and is made of the same slightly shimmery and slightly crinkly parachute nylon as the ENO and the Grand Trunk. For the double size, the colours are chocolate brown for the middle part of the hammock and your choice of fashionable turquoise, fuschia, lime or orange for the outer 2 panels. These panels and the end channels are triple stitched just like the ENO and the Grand Trunk. On the seams that join the side panels. on one side of the hammock, La Siesta has added 4 tabs on the right and left seams. These tabs are meant for anchoring the hammock down with something when using it as a beach blanket. It's a bit awkward as those tabs are on the those triple stitched seams a few inches in instead of on the edges of the hammock as one would expect. However for hammocking, when combined with a piece of string, I found that these tabs were useful for preventing my top quilt/blanket and my pillow from slipping off completely during a nap. As the blanket usually slips towards the legs and off one side of the hammock I just tied a bit of kitchen twine to the corner of the throw and the other end under the hammock to one of the tabs.
The main selling point of the La Siesta travel hammock seems to be their German-designed and patented suspension system. It consists of a sexy organically-shaped fibreglass reinforced nylon hook and polyester rope. The system is easy to use and can be adjusted without undoing anything. There are no knots to learn or tie.Read more ›
But here is the real reason I LOVE THIS HAMMOCK. I read that the small loops on either side of hammock are meant to tie down the hammock when being used as a picnic blanket/ground cover, but there was a fantastic and slightly adventurous HACK that these ties can be used for! The first time camping with this hammock in tow, the hammock was setup on a perfect lake side position, while an REI Half Dome tent was set up near by. After realizing that there was a possibility of rain, there was either a need to get off the wet ground, or have cover in the hammock. After a small amount of idea crunching and ingenuity, it was discovered that you can actually very easily anchor your tent ONTO the hammock! The tent poles can thread through these outermost loops and be able to stabilize themselves when inserted into the corner grommets for the tent. This makes the whole setup slightly top heavy and momentarily unstable because the tent is much more narrow while inside the hammock, but if you place a sleeping pad/air mattress inside, a sleeping bag or two, it will help to stabilize the tent. You can even attach a rain fly to the tent as per usual and have an amazing Sky Camping experience protected from all the elements! I have never slept more comfortably in a tent than with this setup. It is absolutely my preference for camping now.Read more ›
