Way way better than the Delkin!

My review of this product should be read along side my review of the Delkin Expresscard Reader Compact Flash Reader Writer Delkin Devices DDEXP34-CF-2 ExpressCard Compact Flash Adapter. I purchased both at the same time from Amazon. My primary use will be in a Lenovo T60 with an Expresscard 54 slot but I also have a Lenovo S10 netbook that has an Expresscard 34 slot. I had high hopes for the Delkin as the only device I needed because a 34 card will fit in a 54 slot but not the other way around. The Delkin is also one of the only devices of this type that clearly states it uses the PCI-e interface and not the USB 2.0 part of the Expresscard standard.

I tested the Delkin against the SIIG and as a benchmark my trusty Sandisk Imagemate CF reader (standard external USB 2.0 CF reader). My tests were completed on a Lenovo T60 running Windows XP with two data packages, one 100Mb and then pair of folders with 1Gb total made up of smaller files inside. It was my intention to simulate a typical transfer of files from a digital camera, which will be the main way I will use the adpater in the real world. In each case I timed the transfer to and from a Sandisk Extreme IV 4 Gb CF card. The times I got were very surprising!

When I purchased both the Delkin and the SIIG I was hedging my bets as I really expected better of the Delkin but was leary of the price tag. A "brand name" product with clearly stated performance benefits vs. a no name product (the SIIG); the winner should have been the Delkin but based on my testing it clearly wasn't.

The SIIG is not the perfect product but it performance differnces clearly made it the winner in my testing. The SIIG does fit flush inside my Lenovo T60 but because of the way the CF card slots into the SIIG you will end up removing it from the Expresscard slot each time you need to use it. The CF pins have a sliding spring loaded shroud that seems unecessarily complicated. I would have prefered to see a full sized slot like on my anceint and slow Sandisk PCMCIA to CF adapter. It is unfortunate that in my case I have to compromise and keep the Expresscard 54 sized adapter. But I can accept the loss of a secondary benefit use as it was not a must have requirement of my needs.

Bottom line is if you have an Expresscard 54 slot get the SIIG over the Delkin. If you only have a Expresscard 34 slot keep looking :) , but do let me know if you find a 34 sized adapter that fits flush with a standard laptop and has performance as good as the SIIG.

Does the job

Just received this and tested it. It fits flush with the side of my laptop, so I plan to just leave it in all the time. When you have a CF card plugged in, it sticks out about 3/4 of an inch- makes it easy to pull out, but you probably wouldn't want to leave the CF card in all the time. Vista's built-in drivers load within seconds of plugging it in, and add a new removable disk drive to the system even if there's no CF card in. Transfers to and from my Extreme III CF card average around 15MB/s, a big improvement to the old PCMCIA adapter I was using. There's even a little plastic cover that protects the CF pins (you can see it in the picture), and slides back into the body when you push a CF card in. I've never had bent pins in a CF drive, but its a nice thought nonetheless. My only complaint is that it's a little tricky to get the CF card aligned properly when you're pushing it in, especially when this is already in your computer and you're trying to plug in the card by touch. It's not perfect, but it does the job I bought it for.

Makes a great first impression!

Just got the reader in today and couldn't be happier. My laptop (Gateway ML6720) has a built-in SD reader, but I needed a compact flash reader for my Olympus E-510 camera. I tested it with the Kingston Elite Pro 4GB card that I purchased with it and a Sandisk Extreme III 2GB card that I already had. Read/Write speeds were faster than the cheap USB reader I was using before and I can now ditch the nuisance of an extra cable when traveling.

The reader itself sticks out about 1-2mm from the side of my laptop. This might be an issue if you want to leave it in and have a snug laptop case that it might snag on. I keep my laptop out on the desk most days and it won't rub against my laptop backpack, so no problems for me. I was concerned at first about the reviews complaining about difficulty inserting the card without first taking the reader out of the slot. After looking at it closely for a couple of minutes and practicing a couple of times to get the feel, I can easily insert the card without removing the reader. I actually have a harder time inserting it in my external reader.

My laptop has Vista Premium 32-bit and recognized the reader quickly. It shows in the menu as a dedicated removable disk drive...similar to a CD-ROM drive. I haven't tested to see if it disables my SD card reader. I would only consider this a minor inconvenience if it did. The only true inconvenience is the click-in/click-out mechanism on my laptop. This isn't an issue with the reader, just a necessary evil for this device on my laptop. I did notice, though, that I can insert the card most times without ejecting the reader. If it does eject, it only takes a quick push to snap it back in. For me, this is definitely not a strike against the reader.

ExpressCard CF adapter

This is exactly what I was looking for. I shoot a Canon 40D in RAW mode and was looking for an easy and fast way to transfer photos from CF cards to my laptop without having to plug in an external device. This card reader fits flush in the express card slot of my Lenovo T400. The CF card does extend out of the laptop but it is a good reminder to remove it and replace it in the camera.
The transfer speed is excellent. Overall, worth the money.
