I recently purchased a MacBook Air, which does not have an ethernet port, and I wanted to have the option, in places with crappy Wi-Fi, to be able to plug it into the wall and get a stable connection. I looked at the adapter that Apple sold in their stores, and noticed that it is USB 2.0, with only 10/100 speed support. I wanted an up-to-date product, which would give me flexibility in the future to use it with faster connections. So I got this device. It came as described, but nowhere on the Amazon page, nor in the literature that came with the device, did it say how to use it with a Mac. It came with Windows drivers, but no mac drivers. After doing a google search for the company's website, and a search on their site for the model number, I was able to locate Mac drivers, and I got it up and running.

The Mac drivers can be downloaded at: [...]
Please note: I am running OSX 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, and I cannot vouch for compatibility with any previous operating systems. However, SIIG's website does note this driver as being for OSX 10.6 and 10.7.

I love SIIG products! I just have one issue with the SIIG USB 3.0 10/100/1000. It gets packet errors when plugged into a USB 2.0 port. It's a lot less then some of the other products I've tested. However, if you plug it into a USB 3.0 port it's error free. Unfortunately I need USB 2.0 Gigabit ethernet. I own a SIIG USB 2.0 Gigabit ethernet adapter and that things is amazing to bad they are like 80-100$ now.

From my testing I've concluded that USB 3.0 Gigabit adapters plugged into a USB 2.0 will not be error free. I'm guessing it has to do with 3.0 adapter expecting more throughput, which bottlenecks the throughput. Thus causing packet errors. I don't know if these results would be the same on a windows machine.

These tests were done on pfSense. I should have taken a screenshot but I did write it down my results.

8 days and 22 hours it got 364 errors.

pfSense is based off of the FreeBSD kernel which makes it Unix based. Linux and OS X are also Unix based. I can't say that Linux or OS X would work the same but they would likely behave similar.

Lastly, if your network requirements are not greater than 100mbps then I would and you only have USB 2.0 then I would go with the SIIG USB 2.0 10/100 adapter. I have one going for 9 months now and it's error free!

Bought 2 of these. I have a mac and a pc. On both machines with the latest drivers straight from siig, it sort of works but when transferring large files it times out and explorer times out and stops the copy, and on mac it times out but after a while it picks up where it left off but this happens multiple times on large files. For browsing the net it works but it will time out once in a while.

I bought this for my Macbook air. I need to remote login for work so sometimes I need a quicker and more reliable connection instead of WiFi. I've used it with both Comcast and AT&T U-Verse with no problems. Every once in a while when Apple would force updates it would loose the driver for the SIIG. I just redownload the driver from the SIIG site and no problems. You have to dig around a bit on the SIIG site for the driver but it's there. I've been using it reliably for more than 3yrs and the speed is still the same as when I bought it. I was worried about the wire getting worn out but I don't move it around much so it's still holding up with no weakness or fraying.

The goal was to find an adapter for my Dell Latitude 10 tablet.

This is 100% Compatible with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 without the need for external drivers. A driver disc was included however it was not needed.

Con: My unit show up with visible grease on the outside. I contacted Siig and they instructed me to return to Amazon. I needed to use the unit so I wiped it off, zero problems sense.

For my Macbook Air, which doesn't include an ethernet port and comes with only one thunderbolt port which I use for a monitor, this USB 3.0 was the perfect solution to easily add ethernet. The adapter itself feels sturdily constructed while still being small enough and bendable. I'm glad I opted for SIIG's USB 3.0 speeds vs Apple's USB 2.0 adapter.

I recently bought three similar USB 3.0/Ethernet adapters. The Siig and Plugable ones each died in less than a week. The BobJGear worked well, but after 10 days, the USB connection somehow loosened and it would constantly slip out of the USB port. Pain in the butt.

Up till then I had an ethernet/ethernet adapter ($25) for 9 months but it turned out to be cheapass plastic that unraveled and died. I learned a few things from these experiences:

One, any of these may work well with a PC or laptop that always stays put. In my case, I was constantly relocating my laptop, thus contributing to the wear and tear, esp. of the ethernet/ethernet adapter.

Two, much cheaper and more cost effective solutions are available on Amazon for everyone, but are especially recommended for those who constantly reposition their laptops. So, I purchased the following items:
First, I got the "Intellinet CAT.6 Modular Inline Coupler Female to Female, FTP, Shielded" in conjunction with the " Shaxon L726SM803WT-6FB RJ45 to RJ45 Shielded Category 6 Patch Cord - White, 3 Feet." Total cost $11.40.

This allows me to insert my 50ft ethernet cable into one end of the coupler and the 3ft cable into the other. That way, the 3ft cable is the one that goes in and out of the laptop port, again and again. Therefore, the wear and tear is on a cheap, easily replaceable part. Before, I had the ends of the 50ft cable in tatters, but that's another story.

As backup, I got the ”Cables Unlimited Cat6 Crossover Adapter" for $5. This allows me to insert my 50ft ethernet cable into one end and plug the other end directly into the ethernet port. So if the 3ft cable dies, I have a lesser substitute at the ready, which will do until a new 3ft cable appears.
