First of all: the current price is a real bargain! I bought the serger here in Germany for almost the same price, BUT in Euro.
The reason for the dropping price is for sure that so many owners (especially beginners) are facing so much trouble with it (I suppose that every third or fourth machine is returned to Amazon).
Which is NOT necessary at all. As other reviewers mentioned several times, reading the funny manual is the clue.
The machine is a real good and sturdy one, the only thing is that you need to learn how to handle it. If you are a real beginner and/or tend to be impatient, this is not the machine for you to buy. Go and find a simple one to start with.
For all the others: take that little money and buy this item. And in addition download the workbook and then: learn and practice.
For those who are not familiar with the current brand-mix: Singer, Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking are ONE enterprise (SVP worldwide) since a couple of years. Have a look in the internet and compare the following machines: Singer Professional 5, Pfaff Coverlock 3.0 and 4.0 and Husqvarna Viking Huskylock S25 (Maybe some of them are not available in the US, google it anyway). Don't be fooled by the external design, they LOOK different, but they aren't. Inside you'll find exactly the same mechanism (except the Pfaff 4.0 and HV Huskylock S25 which come with an electronic display, but this is more or less the only difference). If you compare the manuals which are available as downloads as well, it becomes quite clear, that the basic chassis is the same. What's not the same is the price.
If you get the Singer serger you will have a Pfaff Coverlock 3.0 in a different design and without extension table.
Regarding the problems with stitching and broken threads/needles:
Take the money you've saved and buy QUALITY overlock thread and be sure to use the correct needles; regular standard needles for conventional household sewing machines don't fit. Yes, in this case size matters! :-)
Especially when using the cover-stitch it is essential to use real quality yarn. Imagine how much money you spent on the machine compared to the price of some spools of good thread. Another reason is that you spent time and sometimes nerves on your sewing projects and if you are using quality thread it will stay for several years and washing cycles without breaking. By the way: quality thread even LOOKS better on garments... :-)
Another very simply thing you should always keep in mind: When changing or replacing the needles, be sure to put them in COMPLETELY, this is very easy when you loosen ALL screws and then slide in the needles thoroughly before tighten the screws again (please tighten ALL screws, even those which are not in use, a serger's needle bar is a high-speed thing and if screws are not tightened you may find them anywhere else or not at all and need to see your local dealer frequently to buy new ones). The space in the needle holder is very limited and if you don't loosen the screw next to the one which secures the needle you are replacing, the screw next to it will block the way for the needle which results in improper needle position which is essential for timing with the loopers. If there is a difference far less than 1 millimeter (sorry, European :-)), it won't work and it is NOT a failure of the machine. It needs to be set-up properly to get proper results.
Last not least for those who have problems with the automatic tension: do what is mentioned in the manual: after re-threading the machine set the ATD-knob again to the appropriate position, simply re-dial the ATD when all your desired threads are properly inserted into the tension discs. Rule of thumb: Skipped stitches=needle problem (broken or improperly inserted needle), loose, fluffily seams: tension issue (thread not inserted properly into discs, wrong program or dirt/dust between the tension discs) :-)
When sewing the 2-thread-cover-stitch keep in mind, that the thread for the right seam takes the path which usually is the one for the upper looper!!! When stitching the wide 2-thread-cover-stitch the regular path for the right needle thread is NOT in use!!!
I hope it was a bit helpful, greetings from Berlin and have as much fun with your serger as I do :-)
Yes, it can be overwhelming and complicated at first. Best to follow the advice of the veterans here - read through the manual to get an idea of the layout of the machine, and then use the workbook to learn each individual stitch and how to set it up. The tweezers are so much your friend in getting things threaded. It really isn't that complicated if you follow the diagrams step by step and everything is color coded. I tend to over complicate things and had to make myself slow down, then it was so simple. It's tempting to skip around, but it's best to take it little by little, if you're new to it like I am.

I chose this machine because I live in a small space and liked the idea of getting 2 machines in one (an overlocker and a coverstitch machine) appealed to me. But it takes so much effort to rethread the machine, I just keep it threaded for overlocking and never bother with the cover stitch. So in retrospect I should have purchased the two machines (or just forget about a coverstitch machine). This machine tries to do too many things, and in doing so doesn't do any of them well.
