This book outlines a very different experience; one where a child is able to take ownership of every aspect of their business, from start to finish. A parent will still need to be very involved in the process, but it is assumed that the child will be doing ALL of the development, production and clean up, and will take responsibility for ensuring their own profitability. Sip empowers a person to get a true business up and running, and it does so in a very non-intimidating way, that is basic enough even for children. Let’s do projections, that means guessing how much you will sell. Let’s think about your brand, that’s what comes to mind when people hear the name of your business. I also appreciated the wealth of online resources, that are simplified to be utilized by tech savvy children.
My main takeaway from reading Sip, is that the author is a terrific father! My own two children, ages 6 and 9, are constantly asking questions about the ways of the world. I take a lot of pride in having long and specific conversations with them about how things work. The author of this book though… he took enlightenment one big step farther and went all in for his children with this project. I am beyond impressed with the amount of work that this must have taken, and with the undeniable resulting knowledge and confidence that any child (or adult) will gain from following the approachable process laid out by this book. Thank you, thank you, for creating this gem!
I found this book to be super practical. If your kid has ever shown interest in selling something, or starting a business with friends, I would highly recommend this book. In ~140 short pages it reveals so much about all the different elements that make a great business, and how being intentional about your choices can have a huge impact on profits. Kids and parents walk away with clear and practical steps such as:
* How to create a business plan
* How to use focus groups to test products before you decide what to sell
* Understanding key sourcing decisions and their impact on profit and quality
* Why good packaging matters
* How to choose a great company name and brand
* How to make a website and do digital marketing
* How to sell
Every chapter exposes kids to huge concepts that they would normally never learn until much later. Parents are likely to learn an enormous amount as well. For example in the selling chapter there are tips on how to overcome the typical #1 objection from potential buyers at lemonade stands: “Oh, sorry, I don’t have cash.” Imagine the kids at the lemonade stand replying with “That’s OK. We take credit cards.” (!!!!) The book actually teaches you how to set up an app on a phone to take credit cards (with adult’s help of course). There are links to templates and videos for more resources.
This is a game-changer, unlike any other kids book about money or business I have ever seen. Truly in a category of its own.
