I cannot speak for the drive cloning software as it was not an interest of mine with this unit.
Update: Still working great. Tested using this with Clonezilla for a specific need and it worked great. It's safe to say this works fine on Linux. Pictures added.
My device arrived intact and plug and play right out of the box. I used it to retrieve data from a now dead laptop SATA I drive. It plugged in and seated fine. Win 7 system recognized it immediately and disk opened up. When I drilled down to My Documents, a window popped up stating that I did not have permission to open this folder, but by pressing continue, I would be granted permanent permission. I said "continue" and for several minutes the system appeared to change the permission on each file in all subfolders (there were 50k files...work computer...and now I have other questions not related to this product). Transfer rate using the USB cable included maxed out around 12 MB/s, less than a quarter the 450 Mb/s advertised max speed. However, all of the data transferred in about 15 minutes and I did not have to mess with installing the disk in an enclosure.
A second folder with much larger files transferred at 30 MB/s, so the read hardware on the old drive could be the limiting factor.
I like the product and will likely purchase a couple more for different locations.
There appears to be 12 models of the device according to the side of the package. Mine arrived with only a USB cable and USB 2.0 capability (Model 875). The difference in models is the eSATA external connection, USB generation, number of SATA docks, number of IDE docks (mine has two), and external USB connections (acting as a USB hub). The two IDE ports were what I ordered so the product description is accurate. The device package has USB 2.0/3.0 pictured -- it depends on the model whether you get 2.0 or 3.0 capability.
I have two PATA drives in the queue to work on and I will update if anything interesting happens.
Overall pleased, but do not expect this connection to be a 3.0 speed demon based on the box. It is a good universal connector.
Update 17 Feb 2017: added photo of side panel with different model numbers. Device working fine on 4 disks I've worked on so far, all SATAs.
I was initially unhappy with the power cord issue. If I hadn't already had a spare I would've returned the unit as defective, as would anyone else in my position. So I initially gave two stars. The seller contacted me, concerned about the low rating. The customer service rep had evidently actually read my review, so didn't bother asking about replacing anything. Instead I was offered compensation (in the form of a refund) . So I've updated my review to reflect the seller's dedication to customer service.
Happy to report that I loaded one hard drive at a time and the system "saw" the hard drive as an external new drive. The drive showed up on explorer as a perfectly functioning device. All I had to do was drag and paste the data to new storage. It the need arises I still have the dock and hard drive so I can repeat the process.
Saved money, time in repair, and retained the data.
I only gave 4 stars out of concern as to how survivable this is. Hard disk generate a lot of operating heat on large saves or transfers. Don't have any experience with how this works long term.
Saw the note about the power code falling out. Mine required a good shove to seat fully, but, having fully seated, is fine.
The Molex connector for the IDE drives slides back and forth. There's a little nubby on the bottom you can shove to move it, but I found it easier to just reach in the top and shove it around. Took a bit of fiddling to get it in the right position, but had no trouble inserting drives once it was right. Had to kind of rock the drives back and forth to pull them out; grumble grumble Molex grumble.
I'm using it with Maxtor drives. I'm betting the WD incompatibility involves the Molex connector on the drive being upside down, but I don't have a WD drive handy to look at.
