The Power Cutter even cuts through vinyl siding.
SKIL's Smartcharge System™ is Energy Star certified.
The circular, rotating blade easily powers through materials up to 1/4 inch thick while the AutoSharp blade system keeps the blade sharp for repetitive use. The Power Cutter uses an integrated 3.6-volt lithium-ion battery which can hold a charge up to 18 months, so it's always ready when it's needed. Weighing less than a pound with an ergonomic soft-grip handle, the power cutter is easy to handle and eliminates the fatigue experienced with standard scissors, making it ideal for people with arthritis.
The Power Cutter also incorporates a blade guard to minimize the possibility of accidents, unlike traditional utility knives that can be dangerous. The Power Cutter is incredibly versatile; cutting carpeting and carpet padding, vinyl flooring, wallpaper, and contact paper with ease. The Power Cutter is also perfect for a number of fabrics including leather, suede, canvas, and denim. For arts and crafts, you can cut through card stock, poster, and foam board, even felt. It can also replace scissors for a precise edge when cutting wrapping paper or bubble wrap.
SKIL Smartcharge Battery System
As with all of SKIL's lithium-ion tools, the SKIL Power Cutter features the SKIL Smartcharge System, which allows the tool to be plugged into the charger indefinitely without damage to the battery. A battery fuel gauge located on top of tool indicates that tool is charged and a built-in hang hole makes the tool easy to store in your workshop or garage.

If you are not feeding it something at maximum thickness, and are keeping it straight, it does a fine job.
As for the safety switch, the tool is designed so that if you grab it with one hand, chances are the switch will be a bit forward of where your thumb is likely to end up. You will be a lot less likely to turn it on by mistake while grabbing it, but the trade off is that the button feels a bit forward of where you might expect it. But it's hardly a chore and stretching your thumb forward a fraction of an inch is all it takes.
The safety switch can be pressed from either side, so you can use it with your left or right hand. But if you use your left hand, you can't see the blade area and are more likely to have problems keeping the tool at the correct angle. If you are left handed, it won't be the ideal tool.
Like some here my family does a fair amount of shopping here and the cardboard boxes can pile up. We try to reuse them for other things, but sometimes they just get out of control and pile up. The Multi-cutter has helped handle this most recent episode, making the dispatching of several dozen boxes in various sizes and states of use and abuse a task that took only a few hours of steady work instead of several hours of frustratingly boring work.
In the, roughly, three hours of steady work the battery held out with no cutting problems until near the very end. I do have to say that running it that constantly is probably not recommended as the unit did start to get a little warm there at the end.
As to the auto-sharpener feature this works very well. While cutting through a box from a vacuum cleaner I hit one of those heavy duty industrial staples and nicked the blade in a couple of spots. Thirty minutes worth of work later and the nicks were all but gone. By the end of my work you couldn't see where I had nicked the cutter at all.
The Multi-cutter has a few nice safety features as well. Beyond the sturdy safety guard around the blade there is also a safety button, set up for right and left handed use, that must be pressed before the trigger will engage. The first time or two you use the tool this is going to feel a little awkward, but you'll get used to it.Read more ›
ORIGINAL REVIEW: I originally bought this to cut up boxes for recycling and the multi-cutter does a great job with that. I already owned Black and Decker Electric Scissors and found them too limited although they are advertised to cut many of the same materials that the Skil Multi-Cutter Skil 2352-01 3.6-Volt Lithium-Ion Multi-Cutter is advertised for. The Skil is not a fast miniature circular blade like I had expected, but don't let the slower speed fool you. This cutter cuts open plastic packaging, reduces all but the very thickest cardboard boxes to easily recycled hunks, trims the bottoms of vinyl vertical blinds evenly and without rough cut marks as are left by the Black and Decker scissorsBlack & Decker SZ360 3.6-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Power Scissors.
One reviewer expressed disatisfaction with their use of the multi-cutter on fabric, so I had figured they wouldn't work well for that. Well, today I thought, "Why not?Read more ›
