This saw has great balance. It uses worm drive gearing with an oil box for cooling and lubrication. Accordingly the saw has very high torque and is much quieter than traditional circular saws. The handles are well positioned for easy grip and handling.
The saw is pretty heavy . . . this provides for very smooth cutting and low vibration. Highly recommended for people that want to buy lifetime tools.
#1 IT can be maintained! There is a wide variety of repair parts if the saw goes down and needs repaired (from something as big as the case to as small as a set of new brushes).
#2 It has oil that has to be changed on a regular basis, just like a car the better you maintain the oil the longer it will last.
#3 The sawblade is on the left side of the saw vs the right side of saw like most cicular saws, makes it much easier to keep an eye on the line and keep the saw where it should be.
#4 The saw is very well balanced and easy to use.
The only negative I have, and it has nothing to do with the saw. The picture Amazon is using is an old picture of the Skil saw HD77 not the SHD77 the picture has the handles and trigger in black when Skil has changed the color to gray for the SHD77.
Be careful of pinching. If it pinches it can kick back similar to a chain saw. There are some built in safety mechanisms though. The most kick back I've experienced is 1 inch.. nothing dangerous.
The brushes are replaceable. Everything in the saw is serviceable. The bottom plate is thick aluminum that won't bend or warp unless you drop it off a building.
The top handle is skinny plastic, I don't like that much, but the only reason it stands out is because the rest of the tool is so dang solid.
Hope that helps.

perfect. 4 years? and still going strong. I love it for how well it can handle the wettest lumber and then be extremely precise for high grade finish plywood cuts on sitePublished 7 months ago by Andrew Hoover
A real good saw the only thing you need to think of is the weight at around 20 # it can be a little heavy but for breaking down plywood you can't go wrong . Read morePublished 10 months ago by JLL. HOSS. Oh
Great saw! A keeper. So much more powerful for cutting 1/4 inch steel plate with abrasive blade. My last saw was fried by this and now I make long straight cuts with ease.Published 11 months ago by Frank Spratt
The one I purchased in 1974 is still going strong and the newer ones are of essentially unchanged design. Read morePublished 18 months ago by Russell Hodin
Not much to say.

Cuts pretty much everything. It's the workhorse of any job site!
Most powerful saw I've ever owned. I'm very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone who needs a heavy duty, long lasting saw.Published 22 months ago by M. Kirkpatrick
I'd love to write a review for this saw but I don't own one. Mine is a Skil model # 77 type 16 from 1986. I bought it new. Read morePublished 23 months ago by Mike from Texas
This saw is fantastic, its just as well built as the old ones, its the only circular saw worth getting if your a pro. Its quite heavy, but that helps to keep it on track. Read morePublished on April 6, 2014 by Robert Frew
