At 40 years old I read a book by Larry Haun, and started watching The Essential Craftsman on YouTube. Larry Haun is a legend in the carpentry space (look up his videos on YouTube), and both these men used a Skilsaw worm drive saw. I decided to give one a shot. After unboxing the saw I could tell that this thing meant business, it has heft and just feels rugged. The first time I propped a 2x4 up on my boot, positioned the saw plate parallel to the end of the board, and cut I was absolutely blown away. The weight of the saw and gravity literally carried the saw right through the board like it was a hot knife going through butter. I thought it might have been a fluke so I grabbed a 2x8 and tried the same thing, again the saw just carried itself right through the lumber, and it was like it was glued to the line. You will quickly discover that this saw does most of the work for you if you let it and gravity help. The torque is simply unmatched, this saw can power through wet 2x lumber all day. The handle is positioned back behind the saw, which gives you very good accuracy as you are pushing forward and the long length makes corrections less extreme. This translates to a more accurate cut.
I feel like a fool for not knowing how much of a difference a worm drive saw makes over a sidewinder for 40+ years. My only regret is having not tried one sooner. Thank you Larry Haun and Scott Wadsworth (aka The Essential Craftsman) for showing me a better way.
Be sure to get some oil and keep your saw clean and maintained. Take care when starting it as it will torque twist in your hand at first. Keep a firm grip and make sure your material is held in place properly. This tool is powerful enough to really injure you if you lax your grip when it binds or throws material. Experience and safety conciousness will go a long way. Always consider safety first.
Also, while this may be a lightweight Skilsaw, it is actually quite heavy compared to a common circular saw. Something to be aware of for the less familiar.
I enjoy this saw very much. My accuracy compared to a cheap circular saw is much higher and I can rely on my tool to give me material that is clean and precise. It won't substitute for poor craftsmanship, but if you know what you are doing and respect the tool it will deliver.
This saw is well worth the price. Be sure to maintain it well and always, always be safe before all else.
One tip, dont forget to purchase the lubricant! This saw will last forever as long as you keep it lubricated and take decent care of it.

But was finding the weight to be too much so I opted to buy this lightweight version.
It’s so much nicer to use than the original and easier on the arm. Love the hook to hang off joist or saw bench and also the bed is well marked.
I have owned only two of these , they last for about 20 years or more depending how you maintain them.
Definitely recommend for professional or novice they take a beating and and give you quality cutting as well as the power to rip long lengths with ease.
Tons of power, quality construction, and a great feel in your hands.
Used it for framing and cutting in place hardwood floors...love the power and solid feel of this saw compared to other corded and cordless saws I have.
Only complaint would be the dust ejection seems to fly right into your face so be sure to have safety glasses on.
Overall a joy to use and tons of power to spare!
