My dad had this watches ancestor, the 6309. It definitly left a lasting impression on me because this is the only style of watch I ever wanted to wear. Built like a tank with rugged good looks. Its simplicity is what makes it so great.
It is ISO certified to be a real diver and has held up well to my rough life style wether at work or play.
It loves the outdoors as much as I do and the ocean even more. I take it swimming/diving with me every day in the summer as I live on an island and am a beach bum. I have since put it on a black, 5 ring NATO nylon strap which is comfrtable and accents the watch nicely. The rubber strap was great but I preferred the look and feel of the more expensive NATO.
This watch comes in two versions, the "J" and the "K". The K, to my knowledge is assembled in Malaysia, has the day in English and Spanish and does not have the words: "21 JEWELS" written on the dail. The J is supposedly assembled in Japan, has the day in English and Arabic with the "21 Jewels" and "Made in Japan" written on the dail. Being fluent in Arabic, I found this a nice touch.
They both use the same 7S26 movement with either the more refined B or C version. Accuracy is within 4 minutes a month which is very acceptable. The Hardlex crystal has proven to be tough as nails. I would of liked this to be a winding/hacking movement but its not a big deal, esepcially at this price point.
In conclusion this watch brings back great memories of my childhood. Its design has held up well to the test of time and in the past year, has proven to be the ultimate watch for the active, marine lifestyle. 6 out of 5 stars!
The unidirectional bezel clicks with quiet reliability. The bezel is easy to use underwater, by the way, and the hands and hour markers are easily read in all light conditions, both on land and underwater. They glow in the dark for between about four and five hours, in my experience, after coming in out of the sun.
This is not a pretentious or ostentatious watch in any way, and it's not a 'big' watch by current standards. It comes on a simple stainless band. Personally I wear mine on a nylon strap, or on a stainless 'mesh' style strap that I personally find more comfortable than the factory band. But if you like a metal band, this one is attractive, durable, not overly heavy, and it does the job.
These are famously durable. I've had mine about four years now, I wear it frequently outdoors in ll kinds of activities, I never baby it or worry about it, and it still looks 99% new--only a determined jeweler's search with a strong magnifier would show up the tiny, almost invisible wear marks on the case and crystal.
These are rated to 200 meters, which is deeper than any human diver is ever going to go. I've taken mine to 120 feet with no problem. I trust this watch completely. It's tough, and can take it.
This particular listing is the version 'made in Japan'. Other than the model number, there's no functional or quality difference (in my opinion) between the Japanese factory's output and the Seiko's made anywhere else. That's my opinion.Read more ›
