FOR USE ON COLD (33-37F) SKINLESS HOT DOGS.
Very cold and firm (but not frozen) hot dogs right from the fridge work best. Hot dogs that are too warm can be too squishy to slot, and no one likes a smooshed dog! If you're in a pinch, tossing overthawed hot dogs back in the freezer for 10-15 minutes can help firm them up before slotting.

I've seen some feedback that the blades aren't sharp or that it doesn't work as advertised. Mine came plenty sharp and it slices effortlessly into hot dogs as long as I use a rocking motion and the meat is cold. Well, I say cold meat because everyone else does, but honestly, I've never tried it on warm meat. Not sure I'd want to. I've used it on Ballpark, Hebrew National, and Hebrew National Jumbo dogs without any issues.
Obviously, SLOTDOG is not the only way to accomplish this. I'd never heard of scoring hot dogs, so I did some manually with a knife first. I was blown away by the difference in flavor and texture. It took maybe 5 minutes to carefully score 4 hot dogs by hand, and it takes maybe a minute to do it with the SLOTDOG. It's worth the 4 minute gain in time and effort to me. But if you haven't already, you should run a knife over a few hot dogs and see for yourself if the purchase is justifiable.
Durability-wise, you could probably drive a car over this thing. It's built like a tank. You will likely never have to worry about pushing too hard and breaking it.
Cleanup is as easy as claimed - just throw it in the dishwasher. I tried scrubbing it with a brush once, but I can't say that was even as effective as the dishwasher. Take my word for it and just hit the easy button.
I've introduced a number of friends to SLOTDOG and none of them have been disappointed.
The edges of the cuts in the casing brown nicely. It's easier to get the nice carmelized flavor without overcooking any portions when flame grilling the dogs. One unexpected benefit is that the bun grips the dog better. This is particularly good for little ones because it keeps the dog from slipping out of the bun as easily.
Our four year old complained more about the "brown stuff" on the outside of his hotdog, but everyone else in the family, including little brother, like browned dogs so we liked these better than unslotted dogs. We also liked that the condiments dripped into the slots on the hotdog.
It does work best if you press it down on one end of the dog first and then sort of rock the pressure to the other end. This is particularly important if you're doing large dogs like the Hebrew national 1/4 pound dogs. If you put too much pressure the dogs will sort of rupture on the side instead of being cut. So on big dogs, make sure you're focusing the pressure on one area at a time until the casing is all cut. The Slotdog is larger in size than expected, so my husband initially bought the two sizes of hotdogs, in case the 1/4 lb. worked better. As it turned out, both sizes worked well. I look forward to offering slotdogs as a fun option when we're cooking hotdogs for a group!
