Product Description

Product Description

The SOG Specialty Knives & Tools AE04-CP Aegis is an easy-to-handle tool that can stand up to tough use, while showcasing top-end opening and locking technology. Made of AUS-8 steel with an attractive hardcase black TiNi finish, the 3.5-inch partially serrated, folding blade has a tanto shape with a very strong tip that's ideal for piercing, sharpens easily and makes quick work of any task. When you start to open the blade, SOG’s patented S.A.T. (SOG Assisted Technology) takes over and high-tension coil springs propel the blade the rest of the way open for fast, easy, one-handed access. A Piston lock utilizes a movable bar wedged between the blade tang and knife handle to securely lock the blade in place when in the open position. The ergonomically contoured and well balanced handle has a black finish and is made of a high strength, abrasion and impact resistant glass-reinforced nylon that will fit comfortably in your hand. The checkered Digi-Grip provides a sure grip for safe, accurate positioning and extra anti-slip security. A reversible pocket clip extends from the back of the handle, allowing the Aegis to sit low in your pocket for the most discreet carry possible. This feature can also be used as a money clip. This knife has a closed length of 4.75-inches, overall length of 8.25-inches, blade thickness of 0.13-inches and weighs 3.1-ounces. The SOG AE04-CP Aegis Knife comes with a limited lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials. Each SOG product is created with the help of company founder and chief engineer, Spencer Frazer. Known for their uncompromising style and performance, these knives and tools showcase innovation, dependability and a unique, futuristic style that has garnered awards and recognition worldwide. SOG products have also won favor among law enforcement, military and industrial customers that rely on their tools to perform flawlessly in the toughest, most adverse conditions.

An Ambitious Name for an Ambitious Knife
Aegis means "shield" or "protection" in Greek, and it is also the code name for both the world's premier integrated air defense system and the sea-based element of the United States Ballistic Missile Defense System. Thanks to SOG's thoughtful design features, this versatile knife lives up to its illustrious name. The knife opens to a full length of 8.25 inches, and its 3.5-inch half-serrated Tanto blade is crafted from AUS-8 stainless steel for improved strength and edge retention. You get the best of both straight and serrated blades with this design, and the Tanto shape of the blade offers an extra strong tip, while the black TiNi finish on this blade offers improved durability along with anti-reflective good looks.

Cryogenic Heat Treatment for a Sharp, Dependable Blade
SOG's unique cryogenic heat treatment process increases the toughness and wear resistance of the blade. The blade's temperature is slowly taken down to less than -300 degrees Fahrenheit and then slowly brought back up to room temperature. This stress relieves the material on an atomic level and increases overall strength and edge retention. This means the knife edge stays sharp longer with significantly less micro-fracturing and edge-chipping.

SOG Assisted Technology Increases Speed, Safety, and Usability
When you start to open the AE-04's blade, SOG's patented S.A.T (SOG Assisted Technology) takes over and high-tension coil springs propel the blade the rest of the way open. This means fast, easy, one-handed access to the AE-04's blade whenever you need it.

Additionally, the unique design of S.A.T. offers security and peace of mind by incorporating locking mechanisms that are stronger, more reliable, and easier to access than other mechanisms. For Aegis Series knives, this means a safety on the side of the handle that delivers extra protection against accidental openings. When the safety is protecting you, its button shows green to confirm that you're ready to slip the knife in your pocket. When you switch the safety off, this button turns red to signal that your blade is ready for deployment.

Ergonomic, Slip-Free Grip Ensures Accurate Handling
This Aegis knife is designed to sit comfortably in either hand, and it's well-balanced for a natural feel that inspires confident cuts. SOG's trademarked, checkered DigiGrip handle provides a sure grip for safe, accurate positioning, while tacky rubber inserts in the handle offer extra anti-slip security. Plus this handle is crafted from tough, glass-reinforced Zytel--a compound that's lightweight, abrasion resistant, and impact resistant.

The knife weighs in at just 3.1 ounces, and it includes SOG's trademarked bayonet clip, which allows the folded knife to ride securely and unobtrusively in your pocket when not in use. This clip is reversible, which means it can be positioned on whichever side of the knife is most convenient for you.

The SOG AE-04 Aegis Folding Knife is backed by a lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials.

I have owned many knives in my day from C.R.K.T., Kershaw, Schrade, Benchmade and others and the SOG Aegis has jumped to the top of my favorites list. The blade is super sharp, beefy and light at the same time. The handle is nice and light with a very comfortable grip. The balance of the knife is just about dead center which means it feels light and fluid in the hand and feels comfortable in many different holding positions. The grips are textured but I do wonder how well I would be able to grip the knife with wet hands which could be a problem because of the force of the assisted opening. A flip of the thumb and the knife opens up very quickly with a good amount of force behind it. You need to have a good grip on the knife or I could see having trouble holding the knife due to the force of it's assisted opening. The arc lock system is nice and super solid. I can't see there being any chance of this knife closing by accident. I got this knife as mainly a utility knife to carry around every day but after getting it home and using it a bit I can see that it will be much more than just an every day utility knife. Although it is a little big to carry around daily this knife will not leave my side. Not only will it be a great utility knife but it will also be great for personal protection. A flick of the thumb and this bad boy it open and ready for any kind of action!

First, I'll agree with all the positive reviews about the SOG Aegis Tanto knife. The knife is simply fantastic.

The purpose of this review is to point out some changes to the knife I received from Amazon vs. what's in the current pictures.
- The lanyard hole is now missing on the pocket clip (pic 1)
- The clip is 'insanely' tight. This knife will *never* fall out of your pocket if clipped in. More likely than not you'll end up damaging your pocket fabric if you always carry the knife in the same place.
- The clip is now rounded, not square (pic 2)
- There is a small amount of the rounded heel of the blade which blocks a bit of the lower case gimping (pic 3)
- And just for the sake of comparison, I've included a picture of the Aegis next to a Micron 2.0 for EDC evaluation.

Bottom line - This knife is so light that it's easy to forget it's in your pocket, but strong enough to be a dependable and attractive EDC.

UPDATE: 2015-03-30
After additional research into comparable Tanto folders I came across the CRKT M16-14ZLEK:
http://www.amazon.com/Columbia-River-Knife-Tool-M16-14ZLEK/dp/B004UHEEFG/

I purchased the CRKT to compare the knives side-by-side. 2 additional photos have been added to this review.

CRKT Pros:
- Stronger handle (metal inside, nylon outside)
- Absolutely zero blade play in any direction (SOG Aegis has some side-to-side wiggle when locked)
- Seat belt cutter
- Glass breaker
- 4-position belt clip
- Longer handle
- The CRKT is currently $14.47 less expensive than the SOG
CRKT Cons:
- Heavier 5.5 oz. (SOG is 3.1 oz.

WOW! I can't even think of why anyone would give this knife anything other then a 5 star rating. First of all, This knife is the sharpest knife I have ever received out of the box from any company. It is so sharp you could cut yourself before you even know it, so be very careful. For the money you are not going to find a better knife in my opinion. It's well made, light weight and the clip allows for deep pocket carry. I would consider this an EDC knife if you live in a rural area (not really a city knife). Also would make a good self defense blade in a pinch, but that is just a personal opinion and I would never tell anyone to use a knife as a weapon.

It is with sad reluctance that write a negative review for a SOG product. Since I joined the Army I've used and loved SOG knives and multi-tools consistently. My digital camo Flash II (which was on my person every day since I bought it) went missing in Kandahar City. It had a sharp blade out of the box, minimal play between blade and handle, and flew open faster than my Benchmade switchblade. I employed it daily and have been itching to replace it. I was wanting to upgrade but I thought the Aegis was out of reach for me price-wise, so when it went on sale here I jumped at the chance.

Well, "upgrade" turned out to be the wrong word. Right out of the box the Aegis was dull as a butter knife... seriously, I'm not exaggerating, I can drag it across my palm without a single nick. The glass-reinforced, nylon handle is probably durable enough, but it looks and feels chintzy and doesn't make for a very comfortable grip. The fitting between the blade and handle is off somehow as well, I can feel and even hear excessive friction for the first half of the opening, which really hinders the assisted opening function. It almost seems like the blade is winning a small, personal victory every time it struggles itself open and slowly locks in place. To top it off, there is much more play between the blade and handle that I feel there should be in a MSPR $120 knife.

So, why did I give it 3 stars instead of less? Partially it's because I really like and depend upon SOG products and it's heartbreaking to give it anything less. But really, to be fair the blade itself is good quality and can be sharpened up nicely. Also, the handle design is actually quite nice, there's just something in the construction that is lacking.
