An Ambitious Name for an Ambitious Knife
Aegis means "shield" or "protection" in Greek, and it is also the code name for both the world's premier integrated air defense system and the sea-based element of the United States Ballistic Missile Defense System. Thanks to SOG's thoughtful design features, this versatile knife lives up to its illustrious name. The knife opens to a full length of 7 inches, and its 3-inch straight blade is crafted from AUS-8 stainless steel for improved strength and edge retention. The black TiNi finish on this blade is both lustrous and unforgettable.
Find the Difference in the Details
Cryogenic Heat Treatment Guarantees a Sharp, Durable Blade
SOG's unique cryogenic heat treatment increases the toughness and wear resistance of the knife's blade. The process takes the knife slowly down in temperature to less than 300 degrees Fahrenheit and then back to room temperature again. This process relieves stress in the material on an atomic level and increases overall strength and edge retention; Knife edges stay sharp longer, with significantly less micro-fracturing and edge-chipping.
Spring to life with SOG Assisted Technology
When you start to open the AE-22 blade, SOG's patented S.A.T. (SOG Assisted Technology) works through the balance of opposing high-tension coil springs. As one opens the blade, the force to propel the knife open becomes greater than the closing force and the blade opens on its own. The end result is the blade propelling open once the operator has initiated the one-handed opening action. With fast, easy access, use the AE-22 blade whenever you need it.
Low-Carry Pocket Clip
The SOG Aegis product line includes a reversible, low-carry bayonet pocket clip. The clip protrudes from the butt of the knife, providing discreet and accessible carry. Plus, the clip is easily reversible for whichever side is most convenient.
Ergonomic Handle Design
The Aegis knife is designed to sit comfortably in either hand, and is well-balanced for a natural feel that inspires confident cuts. SOG's trademarked, checkered DigiGrip handle provides a sure grip for safe, accurate positioning. The tacky rubber inserts on the handle offer extra anti-slip security. Plus, this handle is crafted from tough, glass-reinforced nylon, a compound that is lightweight, abrasion resistant and impact resistant.
Safety Locking Mechanism
Along the handle of the knife you'll find a safety locking mechanism to hold the blade securely closed when not in use. This features ensures the knife is safe and secure in your pocket.

After opening endless Amazon boxes with their notorious gravel impregnated sealing tape, the edge is still like new. Even more amazing is the black TiNi coating is still scratch free. How do I know all this if I gave it to my son? Liked it well enough that I bought one for myself.
SOG Specialty Knives & Tools AE-21 Mini Aegis, 3-Inch Straight Edge Folding Knife, Satin
The blade: Sharp as they come I like this particular point configuration. OK I'll say it... It also fits the curves of the handle of the knife too. The blade itself is way easy to sharpen and put a quick edge back on it. I like the security of the blade lock even though I don't use it. It has popped open in my pocket once... The blade release works really well. I hate the jam bar type locks. They don't engage well enough for me. The blade closed lock is painted red for a locked indication. It won't pop open with this lock engaged-period.
Handle: I really like the rubberized handle inserts. Not slippery when wet. It's sticky enough to provide a good grip. As a martial arts teacher and knife fighter, if I get blood on the knife I don't want it slipping out of my hand. The base of the handle (where the blade goes back into the knife body) is curved and lends itself to again a comfortable, secure grip. It is a good looking knife-if that matters...
This knife comes with the standard lifetime warranty. Since I don't open paint cans with it or chop down trees with it, it should last forever. For me it's use is for cutting the gizzards out of armed assailants. It provides me with a sense of security for a backup to my Kimber TLE.
In fact I'm getting ready to order another one for a student that is getting her black belt shortly.
I was looking for a knife to replace the Benchmade mini barrage that I own. That is an excellent knife also, but is thicker and heavier than I like for everyday use.
Everything I read said that this knife would be thin and light. I was impressed by other SOG knives I owned, so I decided to give this a try. When it arrived, I was very disappointed. It felt like a toy. It was so light and felt so cheap that I could not believe it was a quality knife. It felt stiff and was awkward to open. As i said, if I was in a store I would have put it down and moved onto the next. I was impressed by the blade, both it's shape and its edge, however, so I decided to use it for awhile.
First thing I realized is that you have to use more of a sideways motion when opening the knife than other knives I had. For instance, with the Benchmade the knife will open if you press the thumb stud towards the top of the handle. With the SOG, you have to make sure you move the thumb away from the handle. This little change made all the difference. The assisted opening then work excellently opening the knife quickly and locking it in place. My knife had no wiggle at all, not even any side to side movement that some others had noted. The lock was easy to release and the blade could be closed using one hand if you needed to.
Second thing I noticed is just how useful the clip point blade shape is. I had to cut an insurance card from a printed piece of paper and using the tip of this knife did it like using an Xacto knife. Then I had to trim some duct tape around a home repair.Read more ›
Blade had a slight chip in it, not sure exactly what to do about that, might send it in, but that feels like a lot of work for a very minimal defect atm, but it did lose a star for that. Have a lot of other SOG blades so Im sure this is just a fluke in their production.
