The Vulcan Tanto truly is heavy armament. Named after the General Electric M61A1 Vulcan Gatling Gun, which is used on tactical fighters including the F-15, the Vulcan Tanto is a proven knife, and features san mai steel, a glass-reinforced nylon handle and one of the most powerful locking mechanisms in the world, the Arc-Lock.
A Blade with the Best of Two Worlds
The Vulcan Tanto features a san mai steel, which literally means, "layered steel". This combination contains a very hard VG-10 steel, encased in two softer, more resilient outer layers of 420J2 steel. This allows for a blade with an extremely hard edge, yet the flexibility of softer steel blades. This layering effect can be seen as a "seam" along the grind, just above the blade edge.
The Vulcan Tanto features a pass-through lock-bar and blade kick, which can used to quickly initiate opening of the blade with the press of a finger along the spine of the knife.
SOG Arc-Lock, one of the most powerful locks in the world
The Arc-Lock uses a pivotal block to lock the blade in place, and offers an ambidextrous handle for improved ergonomic grip. Best of all, it is tested to withstand more than 1,000 pounds of pressure on the lock itself. It is considered to be one of the finest locks available.
Low-Carry Pocket Clip
The SOG Vulcan Mini Tanto product line includes a reversible, low-carry pocket clip. The clip protrudes from the butt of the knife, providing discreet and accessible carry. Plus, the clip is easily reversible for whichever side is most convenient.
Ergonomic, Lightweight Design Ensures Comfortable Use
Even if your knife is sharp, it's hard to make precise cuts when it doesn't fit comfortably in your hand. This knife's handle is ergonomically contoured with a textured handle to prevent slipping, and it's made with glass-reinforced nylon. At just 5 ounces, this folding knife is lightweight and easy to carry, yet sturdy enough in the hand to inspire confidence.
This knife is backed by a lifetime warranty that protects against defects in manufacturing and materials.

WOW, this knife is a work of art, was my first impression when I slid my Vulcan out of its box. The solid grip checkering of the handles reminded me of the custom grips on my 1911 Colt. Then a nudge on the kick and a flick of my wrist brought out the most impressive of blades.
The layering of the san mai steel combined with the slight wave of the belly curving into a needle sharp tanto point is not only a thing of beauty, it leaves no doubt that this blade means business. It is obviously designed for a multitude of cutting needs.
And, did I mention sharp? This is beyond doubt the sharpest out of the box knife I have ever bought. I am used to buying a knife and the first thing I have to do is finish sharpening it to my satisfaction, not the case with this one, I haven't even felt the need to run it over my aluminum oxide coated leather strop to bring out the smooth edge.
A firm pull back on the Arc-Lock button with another flick of the wrist and the knife snaps closed, you don't even have to touch the blade.
This is more than just a knife; this thing is a cutting machine.
Most of the "cons" associated with the vulcan relate strictly to personal preference and not to how the knife is made or function. This is a 5 star knife from all that I can tell. I purchased the Kersaw Blur S30V with SpeedSafe. They both arrived at the same time and I would feel just as confident in the reliability and quickness opening the Vulcan as the Blur. Again that may be personal preference.
I am not a knife collector or enthusiast. Just wanted to get a couple good knives. I read a lot of reviews and watched YouTube video reviews on the Vulcan. You might find something better closer to $200 but then again I think this knife can hold its own regardless of price.
worth every bit of it's price. The Tanto VL-03 is really a "Tanto Inspired" blade shape as it has no
hard chiseled tip and in fact has a slight recurve, resulting in a truly beautiful blade, with the San Mai laminate line clearly visible. The handle does not feel "cheap" at all, solid and amazingly ergonomic, Gripped in the closed position the handle doubles as a "kubotan" for SD. The Arch Lock is rock solid, and I can flip this non-assisted knife open to a locked position faster than my assisted open Kershaws, Benchmades and ZTs. If there is any flaw, I would say that it is quite beefy (thickness)making it a bit tough to EDC in your pants pockets, although fine inside a jacket.
