From the Manufacturer
SOG, Tactical Tomahawk Axe, Perfect For Breaching, Excavating, Obstacle Removal & Other Tactical Hatchet Utility Operations. SOG Tactical Tomahawk – Black Based on the Vietnam Tomahawk Axe Tool, the SOG Tactical Tomahawk Camping Axe is an extreme evolution of the original tomahawk axe, which was considered one of the more unusual tactical hatchet weapons of its day. Today, there is a real need for a versatile tactical axe tool for breaching operations, excavation, obstacle removal, extraction, and other utility survival axe applications. The 420 stainless steel camping axe head is mounted to the glass-reinforced tactical axe nylon handle with heavy-duty SOG tomahawk bolts and a steel ferrule for additional tomahawk axe handle reinforcement. Carried in a nylon axe sheath this is a universal axe tool for modern man.

I experienced the same failure in one day of use. Clearly in form and name this is an implement that is intended to be used for striking things. (Duh!) Unfortunately it is not well designed for that use. The tang (the part of the blade that is inserted into the handle) is way to short. The result is that the head becomes loose and and develops a lot of play really quickly.
The tang is so short it doesn't even extend past the small collar you see on the top end of the handle. The collar is so flimsy it deforms rather quickly when the tool is put to use. The result is a quarter to half inch of play in either direction.
If you want something lame to hang in your dorm room this is it. If you want a serious tool for wood craft or survival this axe is a classic example of getting what you pay for. Although I thought SOG was a quality name, in my opinion: their use of that acronym on this tool is downright shameful.
This SOG does have a full length tang. It is forged as part of the head. It cannot separate. There are four bolts that hold the two handle sides to the tang. If the handle sides loosen, go to Harbor Freight, buy a set of torx wrenches and Loctite and go at it. This model tomahawk is excellent for it's intended purposes. I cannot foresee any future design issues. Maybe that is why this company has so many customer service issues. They are not accustomed to having issues with their products.
I cannot speak for all of the tomahawk designs of SOG. If they send me some for review, I will gladly review them and recommend any design changes. But, it appears that they ALL have tangs forged as part of the head. NEW EDIT; AH HA! I just found a shot that shows a broken handle. It seems that only the survival hawk has a full tang, all other SOG tomahawks scrimped on the tang. I read the ink off the product description for the survival hawk before ordering it. The other SOGS had fuzzy handle images that could be construed as full tangs. The tangs on the other models are forged to the head, but are only a couple of inches long! Major FOO PAH, SOG! WHY?.....WHY? You tout these as throwing hawks. and you chince on the handle design.
That makes my head hurt. Now I no longer believe in Santa Clause......BUMMER! Ok, lets get back to business. Maybe the people that purchased the dysfunctional hawks could have the tang extended by welding a piece of stainless flat stock to it, and fashion two side planks for a handle.
Or, maybe there is a better composite material that SOG could brew up and offer the new handles to previous owners at a DISCOUNT price (or, let SOG extend the tang, and refit handles). This is a perfect example of MURPHEES LAW. It can happen to anyone. I still believe in SOG. They have excellent engineers that create unequalled combat survival equipment.
P.S. Why don't you try a one piece 6061 T 6 aircraft aluminum replacement handle? Black hard coat, .015" MIN radius in all inside corners.
The blade came sharper than any hatchet or axe I've ever bought. It's not shaving sharp, but you don't want that on an axe, even if it's a tomahawk. The pry bar works, but would nbe a little better if it were a tad thinner. The hammer faces on the sides are not ideal, but they get the job done in a pinch. And the included firesteel works well, but it's a pain to get it back inside the handle sometimes. Overall, this is a nice, high-quality survival axe, but I certainly wouldn't want it to be my only (or even primary) cutting tool out in the woods. I'll stick to using my Ka-Bar Becker BK7 knife for that.
