Harry and Harriet homeowner's tactical tomahawk!

Harry and Harriet homeowner's tactical tomahawk!
Cons- The Sheath, somebody at SOG needs a beat down, STAT. Please comment on where to get kydex.. The Grip, make that a stern beatdown... The sidewalk kommando death head emblem is a prosecutor's wet dream if one ever used their SOG hawk in self defense.Pros- as advertised a significant evolution of the Vietnam tomahawk. Blade is easily sharpened. Stainless steel is suitable for casual owners and the swamp I live in. Hits above its weight class as a tomahawk should. According to the RMJ website, tactical tomahawks are breaching tools capable of light chopping/cutting and personal defense. This SOG survival Tomahawk is on the low end of what I consider capable. Never a SOG fan, wanted my first tactical hawk to be stainless steel and full tang. The scaxe4 was also a contender. Size and weight won for the SOG. Chopping is akin to a capable large knife. Great for small branches and making kindling and fuel from found branches. The firesteel is even cooler if you remember dryer lint! The Sheath is garbage and barely fits a 2" belt. ... Having used the original Vietnam Tomahawk MANY times as a boy scout bucking firewood, never wanted one. In the seventies dads coming back from the nam gave the boys their hawks making me wonder how much fighting these saw. The same men would never hand us a combat knife.. This SOG survival hawk would have been great when I was a warehouse clerk. Pallet bands, pallets would not stand a chance.Struggles with clearing sticky vines and wild roses, digs well, breaks cinder blocks and bricks. The textured hammer areas will drivea six penny nail into cured Maple. Nail pulling is iffy for me. Fuzzsticks and carving are easy although some will end up taping the handle. The paracord wrap is poorly done. I did a better job on my Cold Steel bushman, that wrap held for over a decade and was still right when removed. This cord shifted after five minutes of chopping. Throws well if you are into that, might want to remove the firesteel first. Firesteel is mostly a gimmick but it works, may want to remove it for chopping according to some. Cannot comment on self defense capability due to lack of experience axe fighting and hope it stays that way.For civilians who are of a be prepared mindset this is a handy versatile tool. Camping and hiking it makes a dandy boil water fire making axe, will pound tent stakes too. Security personnel with buildings and parking lots may want to keep one on tuck. My opinion only, a first responder or warfighter should invest more. For civilians who want a small footprint versatile tool it would be five stars with a decent sheath. The original had a better sheath. If I was still doing security at a large venue, one of these might be nearby but not worn of course. If you have to break into or out of something these tools can be clutch! Have not breached with this tool but have gone through the odd door collecting bail jumpers. If doing that again would definitely bring my SOG survival hawk. Also use mine as a primary cutting tool for "woods loafing" or day hikes when one doesn't need an axe. Light and handy when you didn't know you were going to need it.First responder? Nah fam...Weapon? Maybe not.Handy tool for those so inclined? Four stars all day!

This tool warrants a review. This is an impressive tool, especially for camping/backpacking. I was able to easily take down a tree 5 inches in diameter in a few minutes. After a week of using it making fires, cutting down two smaller trees, trimming the branches, and even cutting small wood for tinder, I haven't noticed any sign of the blade dulling or any form of wear on it minus a few scuffs black of the blade.
SOG has this Hawk extremely sharp! The lower end of the blade is like a needle - I did stab myself with it when putting it back into the sheath and immediately drew blood.
I briefly scratched the fire starter - it sparks just like any other similar product. Others noted it didn't fit flush, I had to insert it 180 degrees from the way that didn't fit flush and it was fine. Minor inconvenience.. or rather not really.
The handle is may be a little thin for large/larger hands but adding some additional paracord or modifications tailored to your needs will fix that. Much easier fix than it being too thick to begin with. I didn't toy with taking off the paracord wrapped handle though it looks and feels like a good quality cord.
The sheath holds securely - the sheath is attached by inserting the handle into the sheath, sliding it up and around the blade. From there, a flap wraps over the top of the blade and secures with a single button. This is a cost effective sheath that serves the intended purpose.

Great addition to my day pack. Light and compact, but still large enough to get the job done. Seems to be well constructed, has a sharp edge, and feels well balanced. The paracord handle is a little slicker than I would like, making the grip a bit challenging but not enough to make it feel unsafe. I have not removed the paracord handle yet and I’m not sure I will unless a true emergency requires it, as I suspect it will be difficult to reattach. The fero rod works well, but could be a little larger in diameter for some added strength. Overall I am very happy with the product and would recommend it to anyone looking for a versatile cutting tool to keep in their pack.

This little hawk is light, fast, sharp, durable, and most importantly functional. Full tang construction really shines on such a light hawk, and the functionality of this tool is tough to beat!
I recommend replacing the paracord, or at least rewrapping it. (I actually used tennis racket grip tape, and it worked wonders in improving the grip) The sheath is functional, although it won't win any awards, and I have replaced mine with kydex, but the one it comes with isn't horrible by any means, just not "great".
The ferro rod isn't necessarily what I would recommend as a primary fire starter, I found it to be a bit "feeble" but then again, if you're using a ferro rod, odds are things aren't going your way! All things considered this SOG Tomahawk is an excellent tool, and a great price. You could do a lot worse! I would happily buy again, aside from a few small modifications, this thing is good to go, and is right at home on my hiking pack.

The quality of the steel and overall construction on this tomahawk is quite good, but the design could be better. I'm not a big fan of the ridging along the upper handle, it might help when wearing gloves but it's rather uncomfortable in the bare hand. The paracord on the lower handle provides a very nice grip. If you want something to chop wood you're better off with a proper hatchet with a more shock-absorbing blade, but this will get the job done.

The blade came sharper than any hatchet or axe I've ever bought. It's not shaving sharp, but you don't want that on an axe, even if it's a tomahawk. The pry bar works, but would nbe a little better if it were a tad thinner. The hammer faces on the sides are not ideal, but they get the job done in a pinch. And the included firesteel works well, but it's a pain to get it back inside the handle sometimes. Overall, this is a nice, high-quality survival axe, but I certainly wouldn't want it to be my only (or even primary) cutting tool out in the woods. I'll stick to using my Ka-Bar Becker BK7 knife for that.

This is my second SOG tomahawk in this exact model. I lost the first one camping and I missed it so much I had to buy another one. The size of this tomahawk is perfect. I love the full tang build, the fire starter built into the handle, the nail remover, and the tactical design overall. This thing is made more for combat versus chopping wood. However, it’d work in survival situations in a pinch, especially with the paracord handle wrap.

I love this thing overall and keep it in my truck should the random need for it arise. It’s definitely got cool factor.

I love this thing. It's badass as hell, great for beginners that want one to throw,it'll take abuse, mine is still decently sharp after hitting dirt, able to still feather stick, chops really great, well balanced once you get your distance right, sticks in really good on spike side and blade, also the spike on the beard of the blade is very useful, just make sure before throwing or heavy chopping to take out the fire steal cause the vibration can cause it to break but it is fixable, also the paracord is still pretty tight after having it for a couple of weeks, all I do on mine is take my hands an lightly hand tighten in a circular motion from top to bottom to where it slides after some throws then it's good for more throws. The nail puller also act as a chain link fence poper, thamk you S.O.G for this great product.

So far I've been very happy with this thing. The edge has help up really well. It takes some getting used to as it feels nothing like a traditional hatchet, but once you dial it in its great. Ferro rod broke, perhaps operator error or a rough one. Either way, sent an email and no question SOG sent me a replacement. I have a few of their products and havnt had other issues, but I feel like if I do they will take care of it easily.

So it's a great little hawk, works as it should and far as I can tell so far it holds up really well.

loosen cords? easy fix.. If you buying a tactical axe, you better know how to fix simply stuff.

but finally a full tang! my 9 years tactical hawk didn't broke but some other tomahawks got broken handle if you did little research.

Just wish longer version and keep this kind of lightness. 16 or 18 inch would be perfect!

I chose this one because I wanted a throwing tomahawk that was light enough to throw from greater distances a little easier. It throws really nicely, looks beautiful, and the paracord wrap is comfortable to throw with. The flint is a nice touch but a bad idea for a tomahawk that slams handle first into wooden objects every now and then. Mine has jammed the flint in a way I'm sure it won't come out unless I break it out, but that was expected and not the reason I bought it. Great little tomahawk, if you want to throw one this is a good option.
