The first thing I do when I get a new folding knife is I adjust the tension that controls how easily the blade swings open and shut. I get the tension right where I want it and I put some blue loctite on the screw. I hope this is helpful.
It feels great in the hand due to its weight and ergo. It does not have a built on pocket clip like a lot of pocket knives have these days which is nice because I prefer a knife without one, as it feels better when you handle it in your hand. Thus, this knife comes with a nylon sheath that attaches pretty easy to your belt. The Arc lock is also a very nice feature. The blade is very sharp, and seems to hold its edge nicely after a lot of use in a few months. This is my first knife with VG-10 steel, and so far, so good. It is a little big for a utility pocket knife. I recommend using it for outdoors/hunting/camping activities. For a large folder, this is primo.
It's a SOG. You can't go wrong.
The axis lock allows me to open the knife one handed, as fast as most assisted knives. When it is locked in place, it might as well be a fixed blade knife.
I have used this knife daily for about four years and it looks and works like new. I marvel at how well designed and manufactured this knife is. It is in a whole different class than any other folder I have ever had my hands on. It is hard to explain how good this knife is. All other folders will be a disappointment after having one of these. With most knives, after you have had them for a while, their flaws and limitations start to emerge. Not so with this knife. It was perfect the day that I bought it, and it is perfect today.
The blade lockup is rock-solid, and the closed blade sits dead-center between the liners. The symmetry of the blade's grind in every aspect is excellent. And it is of course, absurdly sharp. Happily, a lanyard hole at the tail of the grip was not overlooked, and the lack of a pocket clip on this girthy knife does not trouble me.
As I understand it, the Tomcat was SOG's first folding knife, and that first execution of the Tomcat was so well done, and so well received, that SOG's place among manufacturers of premium folding knives was assured. I wish I had begun my own experience with SOG knives with this particular knife, having barely kept just one of the two SOGs previously ordered. Now I know what the fuss is all about!
To all OEMs out there, especially those that aren't afraid to charge for their stuff, and justify that cost with bold talk about excellence, this is all I ask--perfection! Walk your talk! And the S95-N Tomcat I received is both awesome ostensibly perfect!
I like this SOG Tomcat far better than its big brother, the FC01-CP Fatcat, which I ordered and returned. This knife exceeded my expectations, while the other knife at more than twice the price (see my review), left me disappointed and wanting.Read more ›
The Tomcat is NOT assisted/spring opening at all, like some SOG knives are. It does NOT have the safety lock on it either.
