There is always a faithful few that bridge the gap in their life during troublesome times. This book, 'The Son Still Shines', makes us aware of those that stood up in the time of tyrant Hitler. We need to be reminded of such men and women when evil lifts its ugly head. God moves people in His sovereignty to holdfast for truth and make His righteous shine like the dawn.

Paul Schneider was one of those men, whose wife was left alone to raise six children. He resisted not because of organized or political reasons but purely out of faith and ethics that propelled him to speech and write against Hitler after he realized the true nature of the demon man. Paul endured the worst conditions imaginable with tormentings, beatings, and torturings of the SS guards for 18 months. The chapter on his life alone is a worth read. - Rudy g. Hoggard, author 'Family Trackings Riding the American Rails'

Ralph Kruger has selected 11 here-to-fore relatively unknown martyrs who were present in Nazi Germany prior to and during WW II: Bonhoeffer, von Dohnanyi, Moltke, Scholl, Schneider, Kleist, von Stauffenberg, van Beek, Mildred Harnack, Delp, and Mayer. Dietrich Bonhoeffer is the exception to the lack of anonymity since he is well known for his contribution to the resistance movement, his martyrdom and his execution. In this short book, Kruger tells the stories and contributions to the Nazi resistance efforts that resulted in each person's martyrdom. Besides the historical facts that ultimately caused each martyr to be tortured and killed, Kruger interlaces personal anecdotes, quotes from poems and letters, and other helpful details that classic histories generally do not contain. Many of the quotes were originally penned in the German language and translated into English. The roughness of this cross-language translation is preserved in many instances. The level of detail is remarkable with Kruger citing specific military and civilian personalities and leaders by name and showing their involvement with that particular person. He does a good job showing the connections between these people of faith and their common goal of loosening the grip of Hitler on the country and its people. I was particularly struck by the concern of these people for the fate of their country many years before Hitler publicly showed his hand and plan for Germany. I have three critical comments related to this book: 1) there are some typographical errors and deviations from commonly held standards for the formatting of quotes.Read more ›

This book contains fascinating and gripping stories of martyrs, some of whom I had previously read about and others who I had not known. Those with an interest in the history surrounding Nazi Germany and the risks taken by people of faith to combat the Nazi regime will find this book a powerful narrative and a source for their own self reflection. I am hoping that the author writes a sequel at some point since I so appreciated his writing style on this topic. This book is hard to put down once one starts reading.
