From the Manufacturer
What is an unlocked phone?
An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?
Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.
Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.
Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.
How do I set up my unlocked phone?
The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

The 20mp camera works well in low light conditions and has many, many additional modes (manual, full auto, motion shot, scene selection.)
Listening to music using the optional Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling Headset is awesome and almost completely blocks out background noises.
The only reason for the 4 star rating is that with a glass back this phone definitely needs a TPU/GEL case and a screen protector. I'd recommend a tempered glass screen protector as they add some additional strength to the screen.
The only competition on the market is the iPhone 6. So let's do a quick comparison. The Z3 Compact is about the same size as the iPhone 6, weights exactly the same, and has very similar screen in size and resolution. The Z3 has 4 cores running at 2.5 GHz with 2GB of RAM compared to iPhone 6's 2 cores running at 1.4 GHz with 1GB of RAM. Oh and it has a bigger (longer lasting) battery.
Most impressive is the camera on the Z3 Compact. It is a 20MP at f/2.0 using a 1/2.3" chip. And it shoots 4K video (which the iPhone 6 does not do).
Oh and it's waterproof! So when you drop it on the men's room floor, you can pick it up and just rinse it off while bystanders gape at you like you're insane. Or when your psycho girlfriend drops it in the pool (ala Taylor Swift "Blank Space"), as long as you fish it out in less than 30 minutes, you can text her using it and tell her it's over.
And here's the kicker: It costs less than half the price of an iPhone 6. I've been a loyal Apple customer for a long time, and bought the first iPad on the day it came out. I'm sorry to say that I'm no longer willing to pay the Apple Tax.
This phone works great on AT&T. First make sure you get the D5803 model. Then to get LTE data, you need to add the correct APN setting as instructed here: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB424489&cv=820. You should have no problems. I sure didn't.
Sony includes a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful live wallpaper that does not draw very much power. The device is completely unassuming so you don't need to worry if traveling with it and it being a giant golden shiny object.
I owned an iPhone 6+ before this, camera is as-good or better in favorable lighting situations and nearly as good in the dark. I swam in the ocean with this phone and took videos of Stingrays. The video came out surprisingly decent and the phone didn't break, so there's that.
Best battery in any smart phone I have used in recent years and the best battery I have ever had in a touch-only / full screen phone. The LG Quantum, Blackberry, and AudioVox SMT5600 are comparable but these have tiny screens. For me, typical usage gets me 3-4 days. 3-4 days! Three to four days! On a powerful smart phone (more on that later). Even with the heaviest of heavy usage (surfing the web, playing games, etc) I have zero worries about running out of power.
Phone feels perfect to me. I was a true believer in the "phablet" device category until I owned the 6+ and saw that the button and area above the speaker added giant vertical bezels.Read more ›
But the worse came only a month ago (13 months after purchase). A full vertical sector of the digitizer stopped working, out of nowhere. The screen is in perfect condition, but for whatever reason the touchscreen underneath just isn't working properly anymore. I attached a picture of the hardware test I did, so you can see the size of that sector. There are also pictures of the phone itself, so you can see there is no damage at all.
I've also found a number of people complaining of very similar problems in tech support blogs. The display now behaves very erratically all the time, which I find ridiculous, seeing how everyone around me seems to have a samsung with a cracked screen which nonetheless detects their finger with no problem whatsoever.
I'm very disappointed, and I have to say, this is the second out of 5 Sony (Sony-Ericsson) phones I've had throughout the past decade, which has malfunctioned within 18 months after purchase, despite how careful I am with them. In this particular case the problem can be solved by buying a new screen, which costs around $50, with the caveat that the phone will no longer be waterproof.
