Review

5.0 out of 5 starsRich, warm and highly entertaining

A rich, warm, and highly entertaining read. I felt as if I was accompanying Barbara on her travels, I walked with her through the streets of Quito, I sat beside her in the restaurants, drank in the sights, sounds and smells of South America through her vivid writing. I am full of admiration for this lady; to up sticks from Penzance and go solo into Equador, wanting to experience life not as a tourist but directly and in the raw, after grieving the loss of her husband, takes immense courage and strength of character. Hats off to you Barbara!
This book has given me itchy feet and I'm now planning a trip to Quito (and I must see the Salt Cathedral in Colombia, and the Galapagos) South America here I come!

About the Author

Living in a foreign country isn't the same as visiting one. Following the death of her husband from cancer, Barbara Webb set off alone to make a new life for herself in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, 2,800 metres above sea level. In 'South America: A New Rhythm to Life', she describes how she adapted not just to the altitude but to a new language and a new culture. The experience gave her the confidence to explore other places in South America, and the book charts her travels to Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile. 'South America: Under the Skin of a Foreign country' takes up where Barbara left off in 'Moving from Grief in Cornwall'  which recounts her experiences of caring for her terminally ill husband.
