Well, this was a first for me-I was not able to finish this book. I stuck it out all the way to 75%, then just couldn't take it anymore. It was very disappointing, as I had put off finishing another book series to read this one since I had heard many good things about it. After getting as far as I did, I have to ask-did all those people even read the same book? Seriously. Where to start...
-Grammar and basic editing. When you can't even get the apostrophes right...and there were some words the author used that don't mean what I she must think they mean, mixed up words and missing words as well.
-Why are so many of the characters yelling, screaming and shrieking?
-No development of the characters; I found myself not really caring what was happening with any of them.
-The horrible things that happened in to Velaney in the past were introduced into the story very awkwardly, with bits of information peppered in here and there just randomly.
-The story does not flow well at all. The way it is written makes it sound very juvenile, from the things the characters say, the way they act and the way the story is told.
-There are so many unbelievable things-for starters, I don't know of any fire department that would let one of its firemen borrow a fire truck to take someone on a date (for what seemed like a good portion of the day too). And I've never, ever heard of a landlord giving someone a master key to all the apartments in a building just because he's a fireman (seriously-I mean, is he expecting a bunch of fires?). The attitudes , words and actions of Velaney and her parents in regards to Aiden, well the word "ridiculous" springs to mind. Velaney and Aiden's interaction when she leaves her parents house after going to confront them (at that 75% point I mentioned earlier) were what made me throw the towel in on this one.
I know most authors work very hard on their stories so I hate to give a low rating, but when a book gets so unbelievable and totally out there that I can't even finish it, I can't just toss some stars out there. Sorry, but I deleted it (and its sequel, Burn) off my Kindle app. Not worth the 99 cents each that I paid for them.
I only made it as far as 13%. Yep, that's it. I tried and tried, but all I could do is roll my eyes at how lame this book was. My final reason to stop reading this is you talk about a movie, one in which the characters have seen a bunch of times (Cruel Intentions) which just so happens to be one of my favorite movies and you SCREW it up! It is NOT Sarah Michelle's diary that is photocopied! It is Ryan's! The whole movie his diary is talked about, how could you POSSIBLY think it was Sarah's. She had no time for such things as writing in a journal. She was too busy snorting drugs from her rosary. Ugh!
I think giving this a one star is being nice. I noticed after I finished reading this book that I had another book in my list by the same author and I'm don't even know if I should bother reading it. What a joke.
Synopsis: "When your past controls your future, how do you move forward?
Velaney Wills knows about that all too well.
Weak, powerless, and fearing the one person who has hurt her the most...can she overcome the barriers to move forward?
Being saved by a muscled Godsend was never on her agenda, but when firefighter, Eric Reilley comes into her life unexpectedly, everything changes.
Velaney has never felt loved or cared for, and her past prevents her from letting anyone in. Eric manages to break down her walls--despite the repercussions that come for them afterwards.
They have an undeniable spark--something she has never felt before, but will it be enough? Can love overcome all obstacles? Can they save each other to protect their love or will her past shatter everything she never knew she needed...?"
Review: I bought this book and wanted to see what everyone was talking about. I think that this book is great!!! I was drawn in from the very beginning because of the fire. There was a spark for Eric the first time he met Velaney. I thought the story was imaginative and refreshing to read. I loved this story. I saw a lot of mixed reviews and I am so glad that I chose to read this book for myself. It was totally worth the read.
Velaney has had a hard life and is afraid it may come back. She keeps Eric at a far distance thinking it would be the best for him. It was a struggle to see if Eric would be able to get through to Velaney but it turned out good. I love stories that happy that edge about them. I enjoyed this story and think that everyone should read it. I know a lot of people don't like cliffhangers but Burn will be out soon! So you should read it!!!
But beware - there is a cliffhanger!!
I can't wait to read Burn! I am actually about the start an ARC of it!!!
I give it 5 STARS!
