On the first inflation to 25" it's just barely rounded out so it doesn't have to stretch much on the second day to get to full size. It is quite firm after the second inflation to 29". It gets softer with use but not much. I suppose it'll need some air added occasionally, but so do most inflated things. The folds from when it was packaged are still visible, but don't seem to matter. SPRI shows the correct picture with texture and fold marks on their own website (http://www.spri.com/product/elite-xercise-ball/SXBE.html). It smells a bit weird, but the odor of mine wasn't that strong and now is only noticeable when up close to it. To me it's worth the extra $15 to get this over a cheaper ball that might catastrophically fail, leaving you on the floor.
The other size Spri balls that come as a kit with the pump did not smell as bad as this one does. It seems almost like they purposely added something to this for scent purposes, but it doesn't work. It smelled up my whole living area, which is 16' x 14', so I stuck it in a less used room to air out. I am pretty certain it will get better with time. The ones at the gym do not have a noticable smell.
This is the exact same ball that I use at our 24 hour fitness (the elite), but they do put more air in it (it is bigger than mine, because of that). I ordered it, after using theirs, because I do like it. Note: it does have very strong rigid rings around the ball, but they have not bothered me at all. I was concerned the might.
UPDATE: Still smells, several months later. Still like the way it functions, but I have to keep it in my spare room.
I have had cheap Swiss balls burst (not fun!) and after that started using higher quality balls. These included one that looked just like the Gymstick Pro and Fitness-Mad Studio Pro balls but with a different brand/label (same 500kg rating and made in Australia so it was likely the same ball), the GoFit Pro, and then this SPRI Elite. All of them were good but I found the SPRI Elite to be the best combination of price/performance/safety (none of these higher quality balls have ever burst on me). I would recommend all of these balls but liked the SPRI Elite best.
However, everything wears out and my SPRI Elite is beginning to remain deformed, for too long in my estimation, and different than it was. So I just received my new SPRI UltraBall to replace it and the Elite is about to get popped.
I would buy another SPRI Elite but decided to try the SPRI UltraBall. I highly recommend the SPRI Elite; and that you record the "IN USE" date on the ball, monitor for damage, and replace it when needed.
