To start out with, let's review the layout of this book. It is not simply a manual chock full of small text and lots of detail. In fact, this book will remind you more of a college text book - complete with examples, quizzes and a glossary. Readers have multiple chances to check in with their learning and make sure they are absorbing as much information as possible.
Each chapter has multiple "Points to Ponder" section at the end of every subject. These "Points to Ponder" are more than just a summary of what you've already read - so don't skip ahead to these bullet points and think you're getting the full view. These points do go over the highlights, but also add thought problems to the mix, so that your brain can interpret the problems from many different angles.
If you are simply flipping through this book, the first thing you will notice is how many pictures and detailed illustrations there are. As mentioned before - this is not a manual with tiny print. The authors are determined to make sure their readers learn and understand the concepts, and provide screen shots directly from SQL Server so that readers know exactly what to look for. The illustrations point out the important details, and there are also pictures of what will happen if things go wrong - which any student will recognize as a huge help!
If you think a book with so many pictures isn't going to be serious, then think again.Read more ›
This book is easy to read without feeling like you are about to fall asleep. There are lots of examples throughout the book, as well as many figures (pictures of both queries and their results). Exercises have a progression through the chapter and build upon the prior exercise or example.
This book covers a lot of topics, including constraints, triggers, views, stored procedures, user-defined functions, error messages and error handling, and other topics. There is also a chapter on Performance Tips that covers "little things" that help contribute to better performance. The little things add up!
