SQL Programming Joes 2 Pros: Programming and Development for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 is the fourth volume in the very informative Joes 2 Pros series. These education books are more than just an overview of SQL Server, they are a textbook for learning and designed to take beginners and turn them into professionals.

To start out with, let's review the layout of this book. It is not simply a manual chock full of small text and lots of detail. In fact, this book will remind you more of a college text book - complete with examples, quizzes and a glossary. Readers have multiple chances to check in with their learning and make sure they are absorbing as much information as possible.

Each chapter has multiple "Points to Ponder" section at the end of every subject. These "Points to Ponder" are more than just a summary of what you've already read - so don't skip ahead to these bullet points and think you're getting the full view. These points do go over the highlights, but also add thought problems to the mix, so that your brain can interpret the problems from many different angles.

If you are simply flipping through this book, the first thing you will notice is how many pictures and detailed illustrations there are. As mentioned before - this is not a manual with tiny print. The authors are determined to make sure their readers learn and understand the concepts, and provide screen shots directly from SQL Server so that readers know exactly what to look for. The illustrations point out the important details, and there are also pictures of what will happen if things go wrong - which any student will recognize as a huge help!

If you think a book with so many pictures isn't going to be serious, then think again.

I highly recommend this book for both beginning and advanced SQL Server programmers and DBAs. It is concise, easy to read and clear. For those just starting out in their SQL Server career, I can't recommend this book enough. For those more advanced in their careers, this books and its companions in the series are great refresher books.

This book is easy to read without feeling like you are about to fall asleep. There are lots of examples throughout the book, as well as many figures (pictures of both queries and their results). Exercises have a progression through the chapter and build upon the prior exercise or example.

This book covers a lot of topics, including constraints, triggers, views, stored procedures, user-defined functions, error messages and error handling, and other topics. There is also a chapter on Performance Tips that covers "little things" that help contribute to better performance. The little things add up!

Volume 4 SQL Programming is my favorite book of the Joes2Pros series. Adding field constraints with code, creating views, functions, and stored procedure's against the authors provided JProCo database. You will have fun while you are learning! Write custom SQL error messages. Did I mention you will have fun? And this book will also help you pass exam 70-433. As usual with the Joes2Pros series you get bonus video study materials and the labs are awesome.

I have been through the first four volumes of the Joes2Pros series for SQL server 2008. The first three volumes were very good indeed, offering just what they purported to offer: a simple, step-by-step introduction to T-SQL. I was much impressed with them. So it is with regret that I must say that volume four (Programming and development for microsoft sql server 2008) is distinctly inferior to its three predecessors. In a nutshell, the problem is one of organization: the first three volumes were scrupulous about introducing and explaining each new keyword, command or concept before using it, which in my opinion has been one of the strongest pluses in the Joes2Pros series. Volume 4, however, discards this practice. I found myself having to go to the web in nearly every chapter to look up important concepts - not just trivial side-issues - that I know for a fact were simply not covered anywhere in preceding books or chapters. Prior to book 4, I felt confident that this series was a solid introduction to Microsoft's version of SQL. After book 4, I have become concerned that there are core concepts that may have simply not been covered. Book 4 is probably still a good review for the reader who already knows T-SQL and simply wishes to review, but I don't think it's suitable as an introductory text, even for readers who have diligently worked through books 1 through 3. One hopes that the authors will produce a revised edition that addresses this issue and brings vol 4 up to the same high quality as 1 through 3.

I was searching for a resource that could help me prepare for the SQL server certification exam; During that time, i read about Joes2pros book on SQLAuthority.com and thought of getting a copy for me. And after reading this book, i think i am going to purchase other books of this series too because i am impressed by the way authors have explained concepts in this book. And I like that every chapter ends with an exercise and so i instantly get into action of solving problems and trying to get my head around the concept at hand and this methodology has helped me to understand concepts in depth which is key in appearing for the SQL server certification exams.

Thank you Authors! you helped me prepare for 70433!
