What I prefer or like of this book is the layout and logic. It would make more sense if you read from start to end, but you can even jump into an specific chapter and start taking benefit from it. You will need a basic understanding of T-SQL, but the explanations are clear and easy to follow. It helps that they also show the screen-shoots of the query results and they even provide further explanation of the code snippet itself, like what line is doing what, the reason for using CROSS APPLY, etc.
DMVs are not new, they were 1st introduced on SQL2005 couple of years ago, but combine them via JOINS can be a very complex task. I've been creating my own code snippets for quite a while but these two books actually go beyond from giving you a simple code and they teach you something.
By the way, there is no Kindle version of this book at the time of my review, but when you buy the regular paper book, you later can download the ebook version on three different formats, and they are free: PDF, ePub and Mobi, that's a nice deal! I have my own hard copy at home, and downloaded the PDF version on my work's PC. Be aware that some of the code snippets are difficult to read on a Kindle 3 though, so better if you use an iPad of Kindle DXG for that.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested on Performance Tuning via DMVs. This is a less invasive approach when dealing with performance issues on any production database. And "SQL Server DMVs in Action" is the best book I've seen so far on that particular topic.
