Product Description

Other than the Double Tap shift lever, perhaps no component in the SRAM road component family represents a greater departure from familiar mechanical territory than the Force Rear Derailleur. It's a bit of a technical story, but it's one whose benefits are evident the first time you run through your gears: You'll experience crisper, more precise shifting than you've ever felt before. Virtually every rear derailleur you've ever used, pre-Force, was built around 3 springs: The B-position spring, the pivot spring, and the parallelogram spring. What SRAM learned as they developed their rear derailleur, though, was that a 2-spring system built with more powerful springs outperforms the 3-spring standard. By eliminating the B-position spring and fixing your derailleur's B-position in place, the Force derailleur better manages the gap between the guide pulley and your cassette cog. The stout strength of the springs is directly related to the inherent mechanical advantage of the Force Double Tap shifter. Strength requires strength, and it results in punchy, quick shifts. The other half of the story is SRAM's Exact Actuation technology. Most rear derailleurs pull slightly different amounts of cable depending on which end of the gearing spectrum they're in. You can feel this when the first few cogs of your non-SRAM system shift perfectly, and then the shifts are off. With Exact Actuation, the Force derailleur pulls the same amount of cable (and thereby moves the derailleur the same distance) with every click, no matter what gear you're in. Each click gives you a predictable 3mm of cable pull. Thanks to the 2-spring design and Exact Actuation, the Force rear derailleur is perhaps the most user-friendly derailleur we've ever seen.

I upgraded my derailleur from the SRAM Apex to the SRAM Force this weekend. The Apex one worked fine, but I wanted something new for my bike, and I thought this would be a fairly inexpensive upgrade to my bike, and one that could potentially have a marginal beneficial performance improvement to boot. I was doubtful how much of a difference it would really make... I mean a derailleur is after all only a very simple mechanical device.

First impressions: Pretty ugly color scheme on this piece of equipment! My bike is all anodized black, and this is, I don't know, like a grey with a blueish green tint depending on how the light hits it. It's a weird color, and not my favorite. Just looks odd and out of place on my bike. Not even sure what color bike this would compliment, but a straight gray would have been better. Black would have been ideal. (The APEX one was all black)
Here are some links so you can see the color under user lighting conditions:

I weighed it new out of the box and it weights 191 grams.
Took the Apex off and weighed it: 213 grams. (give or take a gram or 2 of dirt)
So not a huge weight savings, but all little bits help.

Went out for a 36 mile bike ride (first really nice weekend around here this year) and have to say I was impressed with the shifting right away. Click on the paddle and instant shift. Very crisp, fast and exact. Up or down it's just click and your there. Best of all, when climbing hills and shifting, even under fairly heavy chain load, shifting was still exact and crisp, and noise free. My riding buddy also noticed how much smoother my shifting was.

In the hilly area where I live, and considering I'm quite out of shape, combining an 50-34 crank and an 11-32 cassette is a great combination! The 50 front and 32 rear combination lets me climb small hills with out dropping to the small front ring. 34 front and 32 rear lets me spin up steep hills slowly.

Finally I can have 11-32! I've been riding 11-25 with 53/39 and on the hardcore climbs I would suffer big time. The gear range is so wide that you can do a lot of climbing in just the large chainring.

*Note: Don't be fooled by the pic, it shows a short cage derailleur. I ordered it and yes it's the correct longer size that enables 11-32.

swapped out my older SRAM Force for this new medium cage shifter. Went on flawlessly, and allowed my to put on an 11-30 rear cassette. Made my hill climbs in the local mountains much more enjoyable! Was hoping to up grade to the SRAM 11-32 cassette, but my freehub only accepts Shimano Dura-ace hubs, darn it!

Very smooth shifting, much more precise than my old one. Goes into the 30 tooth cog with no grinding or resistance. Love it!!

Works perfectly with the cassettes to 32T. For a 10 speed cassette, Shimano does not offer an equivalent road bike 10 speed derailleur. If you want lower gearing on your 10 speed cassette, this should be the derailleur of choice. I must suggest using it with Sram components, cassette and shifters.

Upgraded from a small cage SRAM Force to this model and added a PG-1070 cassette. This derailleur is a piece of art, works very precise when combined with the proper shifters. The Wifli technology allowed me to use a cassette with gears 11-32T, now the hills here in Georgia are easier to conquer.

This derailleur works as I had expected it to. It allows an excellent increase in gearing potential without having to use a compact crankset which reduces top end speed.
We will be using this for Ironman Canada and the lower gearing is almost a requirement for the 6000+ feel of climbing on that course, but there is also a 60 km dead flat section that the big ring is really useful for.
This solves both requirements, with only a minimal weight penalty!
A great product for climbing courses!
