For those of you who downgrade it for its intensity ... a little education is in order. St Elmo's is a steak house in Indianapolis which is famous for this shrimp cocktail ... the entire purpose is to be mind-numbingly intense ... an experience that will give you tingles in parts of your brain that you had no clue were there ... clearly you will believe that you will *never* have to invest in sinus medicine for as long as you live. In this restaurant, if you take a bite and NOT think your ears are on fire ... you might reasonably demand your money back : THAT'S THE POINT!!!

I have been trying ever since to come up with something to try to recreate that intensity at home : heat and flavor ... and could not do it. When a friend brought me a bottle ... I was sorely disappointed - for whatever reason that bottle had next to nothing intensity (I didn't check the expiration date). When I saw it on Amazon ... I figured what the heck ... maybe the one he brought was bad ... and I am glad that I did!!!

The bottled stuff is not necessarily as intense as the stuff at the restaurant ... but it is BY FAR the best rendition of shrimp cocktail I have had SINCE the restaurant. When I got it ... I hedged my bet and bought a jar of Atomic Horseradish as well ... and when I added a bit of that to the St Elmo's, I dare say that I got about as close to the restaurant flavor as I could remember. The bottle by itself is the bomb ... adding the Atomic made it ... well, you get it!!! :-D

Appended Mar2019 - Please be aware as I alluded to above, the intensity does drop off over time. I ended up buying a case and even after splitting with friends and giving some away, it took several months to use it up. The intensity drops off even in bottles that are not opened (I refrigerated all of them). It is still the best cocktail sauce flavor even after the intensity goes away, but if you are looking for that impact, its gotta be fresh.

Great heat, horrible aftertaste

The horseradish heat is wonderful and just as spicy as advertised. However, there is a metallic aftertaste that is nothing short of awful.

Now, the instructions say to keep it refrigerated, and not only was my bottle shipped room temperature (as I expected it to be - I'm not complaining) but it was shipped from Indiana to Florida, where it remained for several days, despite the fact that I live in Northern New Mexico. So it took me 8 days to receive the bottle. Maybe all that time at room temperature affected the flavor? I dunno.

I will certainly never order another one to be delivered in the mail.

My job usually takes me to Indy at least once a year, however the show has since moved to Lousiville. Unfortunately for me I no longer get to enjoy my St Elmos famous shrimp cocktails or Harry and Izzy's shrimp cocktail. After drying my tears tearing up my suicide note, my friends they told me that St Elmos sold the sauce online. HALLELUJAH! Disaster has been averted and I can now enjoy the spicy shrimp cocktail sauce love only St Elmos can deliver!

Horseradish hot

So, I’ve read reviews stating how hot this sauce is. It’s not a hot sauce (chile pepper) hot, but rather a horseradish hot. If you eat either hot mustard with egg rolls or wasabi with sushi, you know what I mean. It’s that sinus-clearing heat that I experienced. It’s not surprising, as horseradish was the first ingredient on my bottle. It was followed by sugar, then tomato paste. I did not detect a real sweetness, probably due to the horseradish.

It’s different than any cocktail sauce I’ve had. It’s quite good, and something fun to try. However, there is not that much tomato flavor, which I am used to in a cocktail sauce. Just something to consider. I may try to do a mix of this plus traditional cocktail sauce. That may be the best of both worlds.

You better like vinegar

To start, I love spicy things. I love hot peppers, and I certainly love horseradish. I also love things like pickled eggs (you'll see why I mentioned that). The problem with this cocktail sauce is that there is so much vinegar in the sauce that it overpowers everything. As you take a bite, you get the initial blast of horseradish (like, clear the sinuses blast). Unfortunately, all you taste after a second is the vinegar. Maybe some people like that. Heck, I like the bitter taste of vinegar myself, but not when it overpowers every flavor in a recipe. Unless you like to drink vinegar, stay away from this sauce.

Lived around Indy for several years. The only thing I miss are the nice people and St. Elmos Cocktail Sauce. ITS HOT so do not buy it and them give them a 1 star review because its hot. I do not usually east hot spicy foods but this sauce is spicy in a good way with an after taste that makes you come back for more. It always amazes my friends who have never tried it before. Go s great with everything

Edited - After eating some of this on chicken I shook the bottle more thoroughly and the Horseradish really started to zing so evidently most of the Horseradish had settled to the bottom of the bottle in storage. This hot cocktail sauce still has a sweet undertone and a strange aftertaste that lingers for a few minutes afterwards (that I don't care for) but the hotter Horseradish helps it a lot. So upon further use of the product and thoroughly shaking the contents for a good mix I give it a higher score... It got noticeably hotter with more zing from the Horseradish from a more thorough shaking to mix the contents so I changed the grade from a 3 to a 4.

So if you have never been to this steak house in Indiana you are missing out. Besides having amazing steaks they have this cocktail sauce that is a punch to the face. No, really it knocks the wind out of you if you take to much at a time. Anyways I just found out they sell it here on Amazon and it's amazing. It was a once or twice a year stop since it's close to four hours from me. So now that I can get it online well I am a super happy camper.
