The integration of the arts and design principles into the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields makes a lot of sense. It is easy to get hung up on the words that become part of a changing acronym but breaking it down to the core is simple. STEM and art are both about problem solving and creativity - so using the fields together adds value. On page 71 in the book, W.A. Wulf is quoted saying “The psychological literature tells us that creativity is not something that just happens. It is the result of making unexpected connections between things we already know. Hence, creativity depends on our life experiences.”
STEAM+ approaches can provide more opportunities for student success by appealing to multiple learning styles, encouraging creative thinking, and building self-confidence. Many of the case studies in this book highlight ways STEAM+ approaches build skills for collaboration amongst students. There is teamwork, opportunity for leadership, meaningful discussion, and active participation in their own learning. Creating a STEAM+ environment allows for opportunities to grow appreciation for other cultures and to get engaged in our communities. All of these skills that can be supported through STEAM+ approaches help our young people become more successful regardless of their career and life paths.
If you’re new to the idea of STEAM+, this is a great book to start learning. If you’re already on the STEAM+ train, this is a book with lots of resources to add to your library.
